It is so hard when you take in a rescue hamster who has had a tough life of mistreatment and has serious behavioural issues as a result. It's not the hamster's fault but entirely the human's who had her before you.

All you want to do is show this little hamster what a good hamster life can be like, what it feels like to be loved and cared for without expecting anything in return.

Then comes the heartbreaking part when you find out that the hamster is ill and you may not be able to give her this opportunity.
Every single day your hamster has been with you counts though. A single day is nothing for us humans but a lot for a hamster who only lives a very short time. You have saved her, cared for her and loved her. She doesn't hate you but she hasn't had enough time yet to learn to trust you.

I really hope that you will have a few more months with her so you can get closer to her, watch her change and learn to relax and trust.

I had a dwarf hamster like yours.

The decision as to whether to operate or let nature take its course (whilst she has some quality of life) is yours to take in consultation with the vet. We have had to have similar discussions about our 19 month old dwarf ham boo who has a tumour and we have decided to not operate and just keep him has happy and comfortable as we can. That is not to say that is the right decision for another ham in a similar situation. We are closely monitoring him and will see how it goes. Do keep us all posted as to how things go tomorrow and remember to be kind to yourself. X ps Your boyfriend sounds a keeper by the way!
Thank you so so much, I'm sorry I made you cry. I'm sorry about Boo but I'm sure you know in your heart you've made the right decision. I just keep thinking of how she's feeling and it sends me into over-drive.
But tonight she has had a BUFFET; she's had meal worms, sunflower seeds, peanuts and dried herbs! More than she should but I'm spoiling her because she's not well. I just spent a good 2 hours just sat next to her cage whilst she does her hamstering. I'm praying all goes well tomorrow.
Thank you again for your kindness, I'm sure you know exactly how I'm feeling. I really appreciate your sympathy and support.
And my boyfriend is a keeper! He loves my animals as much as I do and will do anything to make sure they're ok and that I'm happy. He spends hours helping me move flies out of the house because I hate refuse to kill anything, hes the best!
I'll post as soon as I return from the vets tomorrow, thank you again x

This had me sobbing. Thank you so much, I've tried to give her everything she can have and that I can afford. She has a huge cage, SO MUCH Kaytee Clean and Cosy, so many things to do and so much love. ALL of my money goes on her.
Again, thank you for being so kind. I'll let everyone know how the vets appointment goes x

SHE'S OK!!!
She has a small mass which the vet said seems cancerous, but the HUGE growth was an abscess caused by infection. She's on antibiotic treatment for 2 weeks and the vet said it likely wouldn't be worth putting her through surgery this late in her life with how small the mass is.

Thank you so much everyone, you really have been so comforting to me this week. I'm incredibly grateful.
I'm SO SO SO relieved, I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome x

That’s really good news, I can imagine just how relieved you must be feeling now. I hope the abscess heals quickly now she’s on antibioitics.

This is wonderful news!
Just concentrate on her getting better now and then a whole new world will open up to both of you.
How do you manage to give her the antibiotics?

I am SO happy that the prognosis for your little one is good! The infection is probably why she has been looking poorly lately.

Wishing her a fast and full recovery!

Sarahhh, are you finding it ok giving her the medication? Hammies can be very reluctant to take their medicine by syringe and it can be stressful to them.

If you have any trouble, it is worth mixing the medication into a tiny amount of baby food, the kind you get in jars or pouches at the supermarket. A jar will go a very long way and doesn't cost much. They tend to love baby food and it masks the sometimes bitter taste.

If you do use this, get something like a beef and veggie or sweet potato baby food. You want to avoid anything with tomato in it, anything with citrus in it and anything that is high in sugar.

There is a thread on this forum where the topic of baby food for hammies is discussed.

Best of luck and once again, I'm SO glad she was ok.

I'm going to try putting it on some sprout tonight and if that doesn't work I'll try the baby food method mentioned below x
