Default Hammy's eye is stuck closed

Hi everyone,

My little one's eye has been stuck with sleep and it's becoming an everyday thing now. He usually cleans it himself but recently it's so thick he struggles to.

He's one year and a bit and I have been using paper based bedding (carefresh and kaytee). I think it's the bedding that is causing this because of the sheer amount of dust it produces.

I was wondering if anyone has any tips for relieving this and recommendations for alternative bedding?

Thanks x

I had that problem with carefresh and one of my hamsters it was so dusty. I immediatley changed the bedding to something else and she was fine. Not sure which country you are in but if in the UK you could try aubiose, megazorb or fitch.

Carefresh can be really dusty, if you’re using that with Kaytee then I would just stop using the carefresh & use the Kaytee alone, I don’t have any problems with that.

I'm in the UK and thanks for the recomendations. Have you heard anything about AllSpan bedding? I've been looking on the German forums and they seem to think it's not a dusty bedding. Could I use it mixed with the beddings you recommended?

Sorry, I have not heard of Allspan so I can't comment re that, someone else on here might be able to help.

If you find out it is safe(or find something else that is safe), you can mix it with the other bedding. I like 2 or 3 different types in my cages.

Allspan is very popular & widely used in Germany so I’m pretty sure it would be safe but unless any of our German members can help you out I don’t think anyone here will have had personal experience. with it & I’m not sure if you can get it in the UK. or not.
I may be wrong but I think it’s hemp or very similar, hemp is generally fairly low in dust but I find Kaytee less dusty tbh.

Just one thing I thought I better mention is that sometimes with a sticky eye, it can be an age thing, but from my experience it could also be a sign of when they have an infection, so if changing the bedding doesn't help maybe a visit to the vets. I only focused on the bedding because you seemed to be convinced it was that which was causing the eye issue.

Also Aubiose which I mentioned is hemp so if Allspan is hemp based like Cypher thinks it is, you might be better off with aubiose, especially if allspan is hard to get in this country.

Another excellent alternative substrate would be Small Pet Select's paper bedding. It's pure virgin fiber(something Kaytee isn't as an added bonus in Small Pet Select's favor), is known for extremely low dust levels, and has no dyes and such that could further add to irritation.

I know a lot of people have said good things about Kaytee Clean and Cozy here, but there have also been multiple negative experiences. Even my own experience with it was fairly negative - on the dusty side, and irritating even to me as a human. If I could turn back time and just use Small Pet Select's paper bedding or Oxbow Pure Comfort(similar quality as Small Pet Select in most people's experiences, but not as economical in bulk and likely harder and more expensive to get in the UK) I would.

You could mix Aubiose(excellent quality hemp - pure hemp, no additives, unlike some other hemp products which include citronella which is unsafe or potentially have other additives which shouldn't be in hemp products for pets) and Small Pet Select paper bedding. This could work out especially cost effective if you can get a decent deal at a local feed store for the Aubiose, but if you can't do that definitely shop around online as some places charge way more than others for it!

I also looked into Allspan which seems to be spruce. I personally wouldn't ever use just wood shavings regardless of wood species - paper, or at least a high quality paper such as Small Pet Select, is the best when it comes to holding burrows. There's really no need to add wood shavings of any kind, and wood in general tends to be one of the easiest things for hamsters to have reactions to. Hemp and a true high quality paper, however, are extremely unlikely to cause hamsters to have reactions.
