Yes it could well be from the hay - or the treats - I freeze all food items. I see what you mean if it’s a mesh lid. Just make sure it’s a pet safe disinfectant and rinse well afterwards as they can be affected by scents and the smell of chemical residue.

Will do! Thanks so much for your help! We'll call the vet tomorrow just to be sure and send them the pics of the bugs, hopefully they are just "food" bugs.
I attached a picture of my ham ham, she says thanks for your help!

I freeze everything, food, bedding, snake aspen. I also do a full clean out every 2 weeks. Never had any bugs. I had that problem years ago with my rabbit's food.

Freezing kills moth eggs and other bugs.

If they are in the bedding as well now then yes you will need to do a full cage clean unfortunately. Not great for the hamster but he should settle again in a week or so. Just scatter some treats afterwards to make up for it.

They shouldn’t do any harm - hamsters will eat bugs - a bit of live food! But they could start breeding so you want rid.
Update:

Took her to the vet today and turns out they were mites. We got some medicine applied to her, and are now spraying the whole room with a special spray they gave us, since we saw some of the bugs get from her cage to our couch.
The vet told us its likely from hay, and we did get her this hay toy a few days ago, so its probably that.

Hopefully theyll be gone!

Thanks for this. Just noticed moths fly out of mine last night (hamster is new-to-me as of July 5th.) Looks like I'm in for a day of cleaning! Thanks to EVERYONE who responded to O.P.'s question!
