Default How to make comfortable

I’m fairly certain our Syrian ham, Rocket, is dying. The past few weeks we have noticed her slowing down quite a bit and not eating and drinking as much. But today she’s standing on top of her hideout and rocking and shaking. I tried to pick her up to check for injuries but she flipped over and started shrieking. After two attempts I left her alone. I don’t see any injuries and no signs of sickness, she’s just shaking. I don’t want to stress her out needlessly and if she is indeed dying then I want her to be quiet and peaceful. What can we do for her? She has two Rubbermaid bins attached by a tunnel for her enclosure, one is for tunneling and the other has all of her stuff. I cleaned them both and placed fresh bedding for her and placed her food on the tunneling side which is where she currently is. If I put a bowl of water will she be able to drink out it? Any other suggestions?

I did call and leave a voicemail for a local vet who helped us with our last hamster who had an ear infection, but with no obvious injuries I don’t think he will see her. And the trip there may traumatize her more if she wouldn’t even let me pick her up today.

I am sorry to hear about your little one, it sounds like you have made things comfy and she has all the bedding she needs, and made sure the food is near. I have more experience with sick piggies. However you could try and offer some water from a small syringe, just a gentle drop near her mouth to drink, if she is having difficulty. Is she quite old for a hamster?

I am sure a more knowledgeable person will help.

All the best to you x

It sounds as though you have already done all you can for Rocket. Keep a close eye on her, though, as she sounds distressed and, if she is dying, she may need helping on her way. How is she today?

Thanks everyone for your input We had rocket almost a year but I was not aware of how old she was when we got her from the pet store. After posting yesterday I contained her on just one side of her enclosure so she wouldn’t have to move far and was able to feed her some watermelon. She seemed distressed for about an hour and then she curled up and went to sleep. My son stayed in the room to keep an eye on her and she moved around for a little while but passed away a couple of hours later. I’m so glad that she wasn’t in distress long and seem to pass away as peacefully as she could have.

So very sorry for your loss. I recently lost Sammy and I usually tell people that is their way of passing the torch to another who will need your love and affection. Thank you for loving Rocket. In this wicked world animals have no choice but to turn to us for the care and love that they need. My very best to you. You should consider sharing pictures of Rocket as a remembrance.

So sorry to hear that Rocket has passed away. She was clearly a much-loved hamster, and you gave her a good and happy life. She will find lots of friends at the bridge.
