Default Healthy hamster peeing red?

Hello Sweeties!

I’m getting quite worried about my sweet baby Bow. She’s a year old Syrian Hamster and for the past two weeks now her urine has had a red tint to it. Of course I called the Vet immediately, but they apparently aren’t experienced in small Animals and I’d have to take her to a Small Animal Clinic over 3 hours away, which are only accepting emergency cases due to COVID-19. The clinic has told me that because Bow is otherwise completely healthy that I’ve just to keep an eye on her?

I’m very pleased to say she is in all other aspects, the picture of health!! She is very active, eating very well, her poops are normal, the urine isn’t bad smelling, and she is still the most affectionate little thing.

I read that beetroot can have this effect and the new food I have her on does have very small amounts of dried beetroot in it, could this be the cause? Or would it have stopped by now?

Do you all think I should be more worried and take her to the clinic anyways? I don’t really want to put her through a 3 hour car journey but if she’s in danger of course I will.

Any and all thoughts and opinions are very welcomed. Thank you!! x

Any blood can be serious- either a uti or with a female - pyometra. But yes beetroot can do this. I suppose you could try changing her mix and see if it stops. Are you sure she is peeing red and not just pee’d on something and the colour has run? That has happened before. See if you can find an exotic vet in your region. Even if they won’t see you they might do a telephone or video consultation and prescribe antibiotics.

yes beetroot could affect it, have you removed the beetroot from her food now? if so, has signs of red disapeared?
