Default What is this sound? Is it something to worry about?

Hi, my hoji hasn't been too well lately. Hes had an eye infection that we are treating. He's an older hammy past 2 years now and Syrian. A few nights ago I heard him make this weird noise, finalyl got a recording of it but the audio quality has gone really quiet (had to turn tv real high)

I heard that an eye infection could spread into respitory, this sounds not constant but when hes started doing it its lasted a good half hour...I was wondering if anyone could have a listen and see what ti could be. He's taking some eye drops and metacam but I wouldn't have thought it would be a cause of those, but im no expert. I plan on sending it to vets when they open however I don't think they'll have a clue as theres not many vets where I am that specialise in hammys and the such. Anyway, it's very much appreciated thanks. The links below

Just to highlight, the video is sooooo quiet, his noise is much louder than that it just seems to have lost audio strength.

Umm not sure. May have helped if a slightly longer clip. Does it happen after you have given him his medicine, I just wondered if he was not happy about the medicine.

Check out the noise one of my hamsters made when eating, around the 41 sec mark do you think it sounds like this at all

Hi, I was thinking some more about this, you don't think he is having a problem with eating do you, i.e. it's painful to eat and hence the noise, anyway either way if you are concerned best to get a vets advice, especially as you are already treating the eye.

Eyes and teeth can be linked, some tooth problems can cause eye infections, I think it is worth asking an experienced vet and suggesting a connection and see what they say

Eyes, ears, teeth and throat etc can all be linked and they can get an eye problem if there is a tooth infection eg. Do his teeth look ok? Not overgrown long front ones? And is he eating ok?

He is very old really and they do get prone to sticky eyes when older. I wouldn't worry too much if he is eating ok. The noise could be anything really - they can make quite a loud kind of vibrating noise- which can be anger, excitement or just annoyance - no-one really knows! I've only seen a hamster do it once after he fell - not very far and onto something soft, but it shook him up. I took it very much as a "go away" noise!

As the others say could it be after having the meds if he doesn't like it? With metacam you can give it in a tiny bit of baby food - it doesn't taste bad so they normally just like it up with the pea sized amount of baby food (I drop the metacam on top). As they often don't like syringe feeding.

I think I would just monitor him for now as it can be stressful going to the vets when they're a great age as well. And 2 is a great age. The key is to prevent any suffering at this age. He is on metacam for pain relief. Has the eye improved with the drops or not? And how long do you have to give them? I don't suppose he likes that very much.

Providing he is eating and doing normal behaviours otherwise I would just see how he goes. If you think he is suffering though - looking hunched, ears down and - well you can tell - then it might be kinder to take him to the vets with a view to helping him on his way as if he is in pain when on Metacam then Metacam isn't enough for, say cancer - if there is something else going on.

I couldn't hear much on the video - it sounded more like clicking. They can make all kinds of noises sometimes. Is he still doing it or has it stopped?

How does he seem in himself - it may be that he is in his twilight time and when they are nearing their time they can develop a bit of a rattle. Just keep an eye on him and let him do what he wants and nice treats etc. He is a very great age.

Hey guys, he is still eating fine, I was concerned a bit back as I didn't see his food going down (it would help if fella didnt stash it all like a doomsday prepper) but as far as I can tell he is eating fine and drinking plenty.

When he's out hes doing his normaly thing, all over the place like he's still a young un. On the video it did sound clicky but actually hearing it was more like a high pitch belly rumble or something like that maybe. He's only making this sound when he's asleep I should av mentioned. Not heard him do it while awake, and its not constant like i said, he only does it every now and then. I don't think he's made it today (I couldnt tell if it was a creaky floorboard or him earlier)

He was on drops for a week, did the week but got none down him, now he's on some different ones for another week which im managing better. His eyes are sometmies a little better and sometimes just as bad sadly.

I don't think he's ready to go anywhere yet, but obviously its hard to tell if they're in pain, sadly when it ocmes it won't be the first time ive had to make that choice, it's gonna kill me to do it but I won't let him suffer. But as long as he's eating, drinking and not in pain i'm just enjoying what time we got together.

Vets will be closed again in the next hour so ill try to get a better recording to send them and if I dont manage to ill just call and try to explain it, I didn't think the vets would be able to make it out on that one

It could be bruxing, However this is something rats do more than hamsters in my experience. Rats do it to keep the teeth down however hamsters prefer to chew. It can be done in the same way as we humm, we humm when we happy but we also humm if we feeling uncomfortable in pain or sad to reassure ourselves.

I’m not suggesting it’s time for you to consider euthanasia yet however I watched this really good video on YouTube last night by Isamu Rat Care, The owner talks about considerations and how to tell if your pet is still enjoying life. You might want to watch it, or you might not, it’s very well put together and is watchable without being sad.

Isamu rat care is also where I learnt about bruxing, hamsters and rats are very different but also have similarities in that they are rodents and prey animals which affects their behaviour when in pain.

I hope this may help
