Background: I have a Syrian hamster who just turned 1 last Thursday.
He hasn't had any past health problems and is playful and curious. His behaviour has changed a little (wakes up later and eats a little less food), but I was told it was probably just a seasonal thing. If I let him run around outside of his cage (in a hamster-proofed room) he runs around and looks at everything and then usually chooses one or two toys to be his favourite for that free-roam session (I usually leave 5 out every time and switch the toys every few days). He doesn't seem in pain, but started sleeping outside of his house two days ago under a pile of shredded tissue (I have no idea why he didn't just put the tissue in his house).
Problem: On Tuesday he looked fine, I didn't see more than his face on Wednesday (he was sleeping when I gave him more food), but yesterday night I went to feed him and noticed he had a patch of fur missing near the bottom of his back.
I let him sniff my hand a little and then put him on my lap with a tiny piece of kale. While he was busy eating the kale, I moved the surrounding fur out of the way to look at his skin. It looks like a black spot and the diameter is close to the diameter of a pencil's eraser (a little over half a centimeter). The skin is kind of bumpy, but he doesn't seem irritated by it. He's not scratching at or excessively cleaning that spot, he's not aggressive or skittish, and he's still curious and active.
Question: Does anyone know what's going on with him? Any advice on what I should do?
