Very Hyperactive hamster
Hi I've had my first ever hamster a Syrian for 6 months now, a week ago I upgraded his cage from a savic hamster heaven cage to a rat cage double the size to fit in a bigger wheel. However my hamster is now extremely agitated, constantly running around in circles, biting the cage bars, excessive grooming and trying to escape. I used all same toys and mixed in old bedding to keep his scent. I've tried adding more things for him to hide in I just don't know what to do, incredibly upsetting seeing him this way, feel like I'm a terrible owner

Re: Very Hyperactive hamster
Hi and welcome to HC!
Rat cages are very high and not really suitable for hamsters because they could fall from a great height and hurt themselves.
Does the rat cage give him more floor space than the hamster heaven?
The hamster heaven is a lot lower and maybe your hamster preferred that because hamsters don't like to feel exposed.
You could suspend boredom breaker mats from the ceiling of the cage to visually reduce its height and make the hamster feel more sheltered.

Re: Very Hyperactive hamster
Thank you the rat cage is 100 long, 65 high and 50 wide, when measured the hamster heaven was 80 long, 34 high and 50 wide. The rat cage is the same height as a couple of the hamster terranium cages, but I appreciate they do have a wooden top covering, plastic sides.Thank you I will order some.
