Infected eye and no top teeth need advice
Hi, I have a dwarf hamster and he has had a bad eye, treated for 5 days with salt water and cleaned few times a day. Still not better so vet advised to get drops, on day 2 and seems a bit better so 🤞. He is still happy in himself and running round which is good, but when I checked his mouth just in case I noticed his top teeth are not there and his bottom teeth had grown quite long. I have managed to trim the bottom and I’ve been mixing his food with some porridge to soften it up for him to eat. Is this ok to do until his top teeth come back. Will they come back ? I don’t know what he has done. I just do t want him in pain or anything he is my little baby.

Hi Vikki, does your vet know about the missing top teeth?

Re: Infected eye and no top teeth need advice
How old is he? If he's old then it's not unusual to lose their top teeth. Also not unusual for them to get sticky eyes in old age. Yes start giving him some softer food. As well as porridge, also give him some of his hamster mix which has been soaked so it's soft - in a different dish - still put out the hard mix in the regular dish as they like to pouch it even if they can't eat it easily! That way he'll keep getting the nutrition. If his bottom teeth have got very long they may need clipping at the vets (I think they burr them down now). Although you said you had managed to do something to them already.

Re: Infected eye and no top teeth need advice
He is about 14months old now. I’ve been soaking his food and some porridge oats together to make it easier and he seems to love it. His eye looks like it is getting better but still not opening it yet. Still full of energy and character, I’m just worried about his mouth.

I think you're doing the right thing so far. Serendipity pretty much summed up everything.

Re: Infected eye and no top teeth need advice
I have this problem with my dwarf . With the top teeth, if they are eating normally and not loosing weight I wouldn't worry.

He isn’t loosing weight and is as energetic as usual. His eye is open now and no sign of the infection, the only thing I’ve noticed is it’s not as bright as the other eye, looks cloudy / dull.

Re: Infected eye and no top teeth need advice
He may have a cataract. They don't see that well at the best of times so it shouldn't make much difference to him
