Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
I've got Sock (hybrid dwarf) for 4 days now and I've noticed that his pee smells a lot different than Jupiter's (Syrian). I've had dwarfs in the past but that was a couple of years ago so I don't really remember what they smelled like. Sock is a male hamster and Jupiter is a female. I never really smell Jupiter's cage much when sitting in front of it but after only 4 days Sock's cage has a pretty strong smell. Or is it the difference in gender? Just trying to make sure nothing is wrong..

Re: Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
I've never really noticed much of a pee smell with my male hybrids tbh, not enough to make the cage smelly.
Are you sure it's pee? He could be scent marking his new home a lot.If that's the case it will probably tend to smell less with time.
Is he drinking normally? Diabetic hams pee does smell different & stronger but you would most likely notice him drinking a lot if that were the issue.

Re: Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
That's unusual that the cage smells after only four days. Are you sure that Sock is a male?
I had a female Syrian staying overnight recently and she was a right stinker. Apparently some female hamsters smell when in heat.
As Cypher said, a diabetic hamster's pee smells different and stronger, one of my Hybrids is diabetic and he drinks and pees a lot.

Re: Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
He's not drinking more than normal from what I can tell. It could be scent marking indeed.
I haven't been able to pick him up so I can't really check if he's actually male. I'll just continue to monitor it and who knows, maybe it will go away. Could also be because Jupiter lives in a tank with only ventilation on the top, and Sock lives in a barred cage. Maybe that's why it seems more prominent.

Re: Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
I found my Chinese Hams were a bit stinkier in the pee department and I know my hybrid's cages have smelt different to my Syrians, not worse juts different. But this could be because they pee in different places. But the one thing I have noticed with all my hams, is that in that first week of so there tends to be a stronger smell where I assume they are settling in, marking more and peeing in more places til they find their little hammy groove. So as it's only been a few days since you got Sock, it may just be a case of settling in.

Re: Difference in pee smell syrian vs dwarf
That sounds like a good explanation!
