Mites?!
My hamster, Nutmeg, scratches quite a bit and kind of rubs her hips on things, rolling around a bit when I read with her on the couch at night. She is pretty young, a bit more than 4 months old. At first we thought that she was nervous, just marking her territory with her scent glands, but she does this every night she is on the couch. We looked up mites symptoms, and the things that she does fit some of the symptoms, but she has no inflamed or red skin or any fur falling out. Her skin is perfectly normal and her fur is incredibly soft and full. The weird thing is, she only rubs her body on stuff (we think she is maybe trying to scratch herself in another way?) and scratches on the couch. We don't want to take her to the vet unless we have to, because it is very expensive. Does anyone have any advice?

Re: Mites?!
It doesn't sound like a mite problem.
Do you have any other animals or anything that might leave some scent on the couch? If not it may just be that she's scent marking when out of her own territory.

I think that she might just be marking her territory. When i bring my robo on my desk, she does scratch it a lot.
