I just wanted to add that 20 months is a good age for a dwarf hamster - he is quite elderly now and sooner or later some health issue occurs and really at this stage the best thing is to keep them comfortable. Having said that any kind of bleeding from inside is usually something serious with hamsters. And if it recurs it could be good to see the vet if only to prevent suffering. If he seems ok now and no more bleeding that is good, but watch for signs of him being in pain - they are very good at hiding it being prey animals. Hunching is one sign and also ears down all the time. Fingers crossed he lives his life out in comfort. If there is any further bleeding I would take him to a vet though. They can diagnose and give a prognosis and it may be something treatable even if it is only to relieve discomfort.

Yes, he's had a very good life and thankfully never had any real health issues. It saddens me to see him get skinnier and loose fur on his paws and such but old age comes for us all, sooner or later.

Small update, all remains well with him. He's been more shy lately but I think he's just scared we flip him around to check his bottom. He's still eating, some days more than others (though he always finishes his veggies and always begs for treats). His ears remain raised and in the last few days I've seen him do that "smiley face" hamsters do when happy, several times. He also still stands on his hind legs quite easily and often. He does hunch over a bit while taking naps but then again he also sleeps on his side. I don't think I've seen him sleep on his belly more than once or twice in his lifetime!

Anyway, I was concerned about his feces. The last few days they have been smaller and less uniform so I called the vet. She says it should be normal (I guess I have been paying WAY more attention to his poop that I usually do) and advised keeping a daily weight journal so we can catch any weight losses early.

As usual, I'll update if anything relevant happens!

Floki bled again today. A lot more than before. It was the second time it happened, the first time was the one I mentioned in my post. I called the vet and took her right away.

Turns out, the blood is not coming out of the anus. It's coming out of her genitalia. Yes, I say HER because Floki is a girl. We have been wrong about her sex for the full year and a half she's been with us. We'd been led astray first by the pet shop owner that sexed her as male and later a vet that checked her out. That and of cours our own observations but she never liked being held on her back so we never had anything more than quick looks at her anus and genitalia. It doesn't help her scent gland is very visible, that we can't see her nipples and her backside fooled us into thinking she had testicles.

Anyway, back on track... The vet says she is bleeding from her genitalia. Which could mean either an infection or a tumor. She has been medicated, she is doing antibiotics, an anti inflammatory, painkillers and Iron supplement.

At this point I find myself hoping it is indeed an infection and that she will pull through. Boy or girl, we love that little ball of fluff.

Sorry to hear about her difficulties, but I'm glad you're doing all you can to help her.

Floki passed away last night. We saw how weak she was and decided to take her to bed with us. She died in her mommy's hands and didn't seem to suffer.
