Default Can I use the cage?

Hi everyone, my hamster has recently passed away but before he died he had a lot of health problems. He had a fungal infection that was treated by a vet and his cage was thoroughly cleaned and disinfected. I am looking into fostering a hammy sometime soon and I was wondering if I can use my old hammy's cage after it was cleaned and disinfected. Thank you.

If it's a standard plastic and metal or glass cage it should be safe once cleaned and disinfected. If it's wood the porous surfaces could harbour fungal spores, especially if the wood isn't sealed. Likewise for any wooden toys, I probably wouldn't reuse those under the circumstances.

Thank you for your reply. It's a standard plastic base and metal bars type of cage. I used warm soapy water, bleach and animal cage disinfectant to clean it. Is that good to kill all bacteria and spores?

Yes, that should do it. Hope you enjoy your fostering adventures - and do share them on here!
