Default Torpor Hamster Advice!

my little rescue dwarf has fallen into a state of torpor. he is my second hamster to do this so im little worried after what happened last time i woke a hamster from this situation. (i dont know if i can handle that kinda heartbreaking situation again)

he has currently been like it for atleast 12 hours, ive been heating the room slowly not to shock him, left him in his bed nearest food and water snuggled up in bedding but seems to be no progress even 4 hours later. i know torpor is usually fatal and even if you can wake them theres no garentee they will be healthy and live after. but i wanna give Ekko a chance since he seemed so healthy a few days ago.

ive phoned my vets but they arnt for exotic animals and the vets near by that are exotic specialists say to just warm him up and if no luck by tomorrow bring him in for a checkup for £98, but i want advice for til then as im so worried for him.

also is there any ways to avoid it in the future. i thought just making sure room didn;t fall below 18 degrees celcius would work as i heard minimum is 15, but Ekko has proven otherwise. i even had heating mat to put under cage (with a gap between cage and matt not to burn of course) for days where extra cold but still in this situation.

I'm sorry to hear your ham is so unwell, if the temp hasn't fallen below 18C then it doesn't seem likely that torpor would be the issue. It's more likely to be some kind of illness or possibly organ failure.
How old is he? How did this happen, was he fine before the 12 hours he's been like this or was he showing any signs of illness or changes in behaviour, eating & drinking normally?
It's hard to guess what my be going on but if you can give nay more info it might help.

it seems very familiar to torpor, hes unresponsive, slightly cold but still limp, lowest my rooms got is 17C but very rare due to my heaters timer.
i'm unfornately not 100% on the age, i took him in from a colleague who said her teen daughter didn;t care for him anymore, bought from a pet shop, had him for a few months but she couldn;t remember exactly when they got him or how old he was when they got him, and ive had him since december, but going by his activity and movement he definatly wasnt a senior yet.
forum post i did earlier says hes a winter white hybrid, incase that makes anything more likely. i dunno. (my first dwarf hammy ;w

im not sure how this happened, i checked on him after i noticed he hadn;t run out for food like he always did when i put new scatter feed out and it was still untouched 2 hours later. he was laying in bed, snuggled up, unresponsive , cold but not dead (no rigor mortis). he was fine the day before, running on wheel, eating and drinking , only odd behaviour was he spent one day awake in middle of day compared to usual evening/morning time on thursday.

The symptoms you're seeing are very similar to torpor but it does seem unlikely, nothing you've added really suggests that torpor may be likely. It doesn't sound as though he was showing any obvious signs of ill health previously either which does make it really hard to get any idea what the issue might really be without a good vet to check him out.
I'm really sorry but I don't know what to suggest. you can't really do much more but if he is still like this in the morning then I would get him to the vet & see what they say.

Hi, I don't really know much about Torpor, but it sounds like you are doing everything you can. I too was wondering if it was another illness. I am not sure why the vets would be £98 though, that seems very excessive for a check up. I would have thought £20-£30 then more for anything else needed.

£30-40 is what they charge for common pets, bunnies, cats, dogs.
hamsters full under exotic so more expensive specialist price of £98 apparently. had this before when took hamster in for pyometra. but they are the only nearby exotic vets for me unfortunately.

You could try gently warming him against your body - eg slightly under a cardigan or similar, between the cardigan and your next layer against yourself body, for body heat. In case it is torpor - if it isn’t that it would also be comforting for him. It could have got colder overnight possibly. Heating tends to be off overnight. The unusual daytime behaviour suggests something wasn’t right with him.

Not sure what part of the country you’re in but £98 is ridiculous even for an exotic vet. I use an exotic vet and it’s only £30 to £40 for a check. In the morning maybe google vets near you and look at the descriptions of each vet under the staff section. It sometimes describes a vet as specialising in small pets like guinea pigs and hamsters.

See how your hammy is in the morning. Tonight maybe try warming him a bit against your body. You’ll probably need to leave the heating on overnight as well. In our neck of the woods it is due to snow tomorrow and it’s a cold night.

Some hamsters are born with genetic predispositions - eg a weak heart. So it could be anything if it isn’t torpor.

Assume he has plenty of bedding and nesting material. I do hope it goes ok but if no improvement in the morning then it would be best to see a vet. I would try and warm him next to your body.
