Default Urgent advice needed!!!!

Hi all, so we got a new Syrian hamster last week. He is 7 weeks old and we love him. This morning my son came into the bedroom to say Potter was stuck in the cage. Basically his door to cage was not shut properly and had left a gap. Potter had filled his pouches and one of his pouches was stuck between the bars as he was trying to escape between the gap. He was very distressed and biting at the pouch but thankfully we got him unstuck and he seemed ok. We took him to the vets as there was blood near his cheek and I wasn’t sure how bad the damage was. We have been given 2 options. Have surgery this week as he has punctured the pouch (it won’t heal on its own) or have him put to sleep....😘. She said being so little they don’t respond well to anaesthetics and she can’t guarantee outcome or give us a price just yet. I am really upset and stressed out. He is so lovely and was just settling into his new home. Please help. Any advice greatly appreciated......xxxx

I feel so sorry for everyone involved, hamster and humans. I can only tell you what i would do which is my personal opinion because luckily i have not experienced an unfortunate, accidental situation like this.

I would opt for the surgery and ask the vet to operate asap. I hope that she gave you painrelief for your hamster in the meantime. Of course there is no guarantee for a successful outcome, there never is with any kind of medical treatment. A 7 week old Syrian is little but a Roborovski hamster is even smaller and can be operated on.

Maybe you could ask if there is a vet available who has experience in operating on small animals and feels more positive and confident about it.

I would do the same as Ria, opt for the Op at least I would then know I had done everything possible, even if the end outcome might not be a happy one. Sorry you are going through this. fingers xd for you.

Best of luck for Wednesday. By doing this you are doing everything you possibly can for him and that is what being a pet owner requires. I really hope it is a success and that he heals up completely very soon!

Hi all,
Just updating on Potter. Thankfully he didn’t need the ‘op’ He has been acting normally and eating etc so I started to doubt the procedure anyway and whether it was really necessary. He saw a more senior vet who agreed and said the wound had formed a scab. She couldn’t see a hole in his pouch like the previous vet said there was. Anyway, he’s home and well. Still terrified by us and the slightest noise but were getting there!!! Thanks all the replies xxxx

I'm so so glad that Potter is on the mend! That is great news. Hope he continues to get better and that he settles back down after his traumatic experience.

Glad he is doing ok and didn’t need the op. We have all done it (not closed a cage door but sounds important to check this every night as he tried to get out. Some hamsters we’ve had haven’t even bothered to escape when I left the door fully open all night! By accident. Most would be off if they had the chance. It is very stressful all round when they get stuck so now might be the time to check any other risks. Unfortunately shops sell cages and items that aren’t always safe. So anything with an entrance (tube, house entrance etc) needs to be at least 6cm in diameter. Check for nails or splinters on any wood items (Sandpaper is your friend!). Bar spacing no greater than 1cm (for a Syrian). Cage height no taller than 45cm (any taller needs a full level ). Any hard or sharp items at floor level should go under or on a shelf - so if he decides to monkey bar across the roof and drop he can only land on deep soft substrate (minimum 4” deep really).

Hope he settles ok - just keep an eye on him.
