New hamster only sleeps and barely eats
Hello.
On Monday I got my 6 week old male Russian dwarf hamster.
He has a large cage with hideouts, tunnels etc, but he does not come out a lot.
I have been going to bed very late the past few days (between 1 to 3am), I go to bed and read or sit on my phone with lights off and usually fall asleep by 3am latest, but I have not really seen my hamster leave his nest, and when I wake up, even early he is still sleeping.
I am not sure how much hamsters are meant to drink or eat but it seems like the food in his bowl is not touched and I feed him a muesli mix I was advised to buy at the pet store since that's the food he was raised on.
I have not tried to handle him, I only let him sniff my fingers a few times and that was it.
Please, please give me advice. I have been looking forward to getting a hamster so much and I promised myself now that I am older and have the ability to do research and make conscious decision that I will try to give this hamster a great life. I feel so guilty. I feel like I am doing something wrong, like this is my fault and I am causing him more pain and stress but I do not know what I am doing wrong and I don't understand why he's acting like this.
Thank you.

Re: New hamster only sleeps and barely eats
Try not to worry, most baby hams are quite inquisitive & can't resist coming out to explore but some are much shyer & more nervous so take more time to gain confidence.
It's only been a few days really so I would give him more time, sit close by & talk to him quietly for a while now & then so he gets used to you being around & he should begin to venture out more soon.
How much food did you give him? They don't eat much especially when they're not very active so if you filled a bowl you may not notice if he has eaten some.
If he has enough hideouts in his cage, a big enough wheel that spins freely he should come out soon enough, if he hasn't begun to come out more in a day or so you could just quietly check on him to make sure he is ok & there's nothing wrong.

Re: New hamster only sleeps and barely eats
I went to bed around 23.30 last night and had not seen one hamster. I have four. This morning around 06.45 i saw all four of them so instead of staying up half the night try getting up half an hour earlier.
Hamsters can be reclusive and hide away until they learn to trust their humans so keep talking to your hamster and leave strips of tissue with your scent (wear tissue on your body for a few hours) on it in his cage.
Hamsters require a lot of patience and can't be rushed. They are all different in their personalities too. It took months for my Robo to feel confident to sit on my hand whereas a new dwarf girl sat on my hand rightaway.
You are not doing anything wrong so try and relax a bit.
