Default Stopped Chewing

Hi

I have a question for the wise veterans on this site. Theodore my dwarf hamsters favorite chew by far is a XS whimzee. Just the normal toothbrush ones ... if he was sent to a desert island, I'm sure that would be the first thing he'd take. The routine, since the day he moved in with me a year and a half ago is to finish one off in about 10 days - and so every second Saturday I leave a new one out for him. I must admit I purposely leave them out in the open because his reaction to finding them just sitting out where "any old hamster" could just trundle by and grab it is just too funny! Its always the same - he gives a little shake like "yikes", grabs it and runs full speed (yes he's tripped on them on occasion) to hide them here he's decided it should hide. The spot seems to change every four months or so ... but I've digressed .. sorry.

The question is .. while cleaning his cage a few weeks back I noticed that he'd not touched his last whimzee much so after I placed a new one in his cage almost two weeks ago I've kept an eye on it. He hid it as usual but hasn't touch it at all. He now has two almost compete Whimzees in his hide and that is just not normal. Everything else seems to be just fine. He's eating the same ... hovers down his treats ... begs for a second or third mealworm each night .. is running around and happy. Just not chewing on his favorite chew.

Should I be worried?

That is a little odd but as long as he's eating & active then I wouldn't think it anything to worry about.
I had one ham who would go crazy when I gave him a whimzee, run off to hide it in his house, but he never once chewed one in his whole life, just slept on them!

Thank-you cypher. I'll keep a close watch on him just to be sure.

As long as he's eating fine so there's no dental issue, i wouldn't worry. One of my hamsters has a whimzee stick in a corner seemingly untouched (but looks for it if i forget to put it in after a clean) and his whimzee toothbrush he takes to his house then he chucks it out again and so on.
I think like humans they go off things sometimes or change their minds then back again.
You could try a different shape and colour like the small alligator for variety.

I believe it's fine, I've had a similar experience - my hamster loved these wooden sticks the first time I got them for her. She chewed them up and loved them. The second time I got them, she just didn't show any interest in them.
