Caring for senior hamster
Hey guys, so I just received some disheartening news. I took my Syrian hamster to the vet to have her teeth trimmed since her mouth was bleeding when she chewed on her chew stick. The vet told me my hamster is old, most likely 2 or 3 years old. I bought her from a breeder in February. The breeder told me she was only a few months old. I thought she just turned 1 on November 1st.
I am disheartened to learn my hamster is so old. This is my first hamster, and I thought I would have her for a couple of years. The vet thinks the breeder I bought her from was using her for breeding purposes since she is a unique color. She also has cataracts in both eyes. She’s not very active. She’s not awake for long periods of time and seems to have stopped using her wheel.
What can I do to make the end of her life as comfortable as possible? She is currently living in a 545 square inch cage due to me being on vacation. Her normal cage is over 800 square inches. I read older hamsters prefer smaller cages, so maybe I should keep her in the smaller one?
Also, what signs will there be when she is close to death, if any?

I never had an old hamster but I’m very happy your little one has you to take care of her near her end of life. I’m sorry you were lied to, that is incredibly opportunistic and selfish.

I agree, you sound like a very caring owner and I think your hamster is incredibly lucky. She sounds like she's had a very tough life and deserves kindness and love in her elderly months.

Re: Caring for senior hamster
Thanks for the replies! Unfortunately, my hamster had to be put to sleep yesterday. She had stopped eating and had quickly become very thin. She was constantly sleeping. I didn't want her to suffer any longer.
I'm happy I was able to give her a good life for the 10 months I had her.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I'm also very very glad that your hamster's last 10 months were the best of her life. Bless her little soul.
