Default Hair loss Help Bald Spot on chest

Hello
I have a Robo she is only a few months old. I noticed in the last few weeks she has a large bald spot on her chest.
I removed any items that may be rubbing on her. I've only had her since September and I use Kaytee brand bedding. Could she be allergic?
At first I thought maybe mites but she has no hair loss any where else.
Could she just be over grooming? If it itched I would assume it would be raw and bloody or scabs and she doesn't have anything like that.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? She does have a sand bath, should I remove it in case its causing irritation?

She has also gotten really fat and that area is where her chub rubs!
could that be causing a problem?

I will take here to a vet if it gets worse or doesn't stop. She is very skittish and I cant even pick her up yet and I don't want to upset her unless its necessary.

Thank you for any input

Hello. Firstly she is gorgeous!

We had a very similar problem with our Campbell's on exactly the same spot.

I would suggest strongly that you take her to an exotic animal vet. There are a few things that it may be...mites, allergy or overgrooming are what spring to mind.

We were advised to use torn up plain unbleached paper (basically unprinted newsprint paper like they wrap fish and chips in) in her cage for a few weeks.

Also, what do you feed her? You mentioned she's quite chubby? If she's not on a balanced dwarf hamster food and is getting other treats that might be a cause.

Hello, Thank you for your reply.
I will try the paper suggestion, thank you I was thinking of doing that!
I'm feeding her Higgins Sunburst Gourmet Hamster and Gerbil Food and also a small amount of freeze dried chicken for protein. I was told on another forum that this was the best for a Robo. This is my first time having a Robo I always had winter whites and was told that robos need more protein. I'm kind of regretting it now I fed my other winter whites Oxbow Essentials and they never got this fat! She is hooked on the Higgins and I cant go back to the Oxbow. I don't give her any bad treats mostly veggies and very rarely apple.

I will take her to the vet if I cant get it under control I don't want her to suffer. I've just been holding off because she is very, very skittish and I don't want to stress her out if its something that I can fix.

What helped your Campbell's? Did the paper work?

Thank you so much for your reply!!!!

Just a quick note: this may not have been what Vierville meant but please do not use actual newspaper paper as the inks could be bad for your hamster.

Since she’s young it’s odd for her to have a bald patch. You can try feeding a pinch of linseeds and a drop of evening primrose oil every day to help with hair growth but if something serious is going on that won’t help. It would be good to have a vet check her over for mites.

I don’t think it could be an allergic reaction to bedding or a problem with the sand bath and it’s unlikely to be over grooming.
