Exclamation Advice or information about condition?

Hi guys i havent posted in awhile, i got a syrian hamster for my Son who called her hampy, we loved her to bits she had such a personality, we made sure to take good care of her, she had the barney cage, a big enough wheel, apple sticks to chew on lots of bedding deep enough to burrow with cheap tissue paper and hay and suitable wood chip, she had cheerios as a healthy treat and was beginning to recognise her name, everything was perfect.

Until yesterday we had gone out to see relatives for the day, so we figured when he get back hampy would be up and awake like she normally was... Only she wasnt i dont know why but i suddenly had a really bad feeling like i wanted to check on her, usually when shes asleep i.dont really get that, so i put my Son to sleep in bed and carefuly take her out of her little wooden nest house, she was really floppy and just hugging me which is strange as usually shes full of energy so i take her with me into the lounge to not worry my Son, and her front and backside is completely soaked, she looked like she was covered in poo, but when i went to gently wipe it i realised it was blood, so i cleaned her up and hugged her to me in a blanket as she felt really cold, i was really panicking as it was 11pm nowhere was open. It was about half an hour later that i realised after a few chattery noises she wasnt breathing, she had died on me, she was 3 months old and my sons first pet, it Looked like the blood was coming from her bum, in the morning when i checked her wooden nest it was covered in blood, does anyone know what she could have died from?

She was full of energy the day before we really cant believe it, i did find one mouldy cheerio from where her water bottle had been leaking but it couldnt have been from one cheerio surely especially in one day? We were rushing as we were late in the morning and shes usually asleep then so we generally see her and clean her when she wakes up at night but i really cant believe this has happened and feel so guilty for not checking on her in the morning.
I'd really like to know what we did wrong?! Weve gotten her cremated as my son wanted the ashes but i think this has put him off hamsters now especially having to carry her back in a box and say goodbye just three months later 😭
Sorry this is long but i really grew attatched to her and would like any opinions on what she might have had? I didnt think it was wet tail as there was solid poos not diarrhea.
The pictures of her were taken literally the night before, she was a lively little thing
Any help would be greatly appreciated xx

I am so very sorry to hear of this, it is such a distressing experience! I once lost a hamster who appeared to have suffered a prolapse. She appeared healthy and was the most boisterous of all my hamsters, so it was most unexpected, which is why I only looked into her cage in the evening because my little monkey wasn't peering out at me and climbing the bars like usual. There was not a great deal of blood to be seen, but I was wracked with guilt and dumped the substrate in the bin. I dare not look and wrapped her up, placing her in a little cardboard coffin for burial. Even writing this I'm upset. She was not a baby, but she was not old, closer to a year.

I don't know if your baby suffered from this (a prolapse), it's hard to know really. Maybe someone with more knowledge or experience might be able to enlighten us.
The only thing I can say is that it is not a common occurrence. I had 6 others who did not pass away in such a horrifying manner. I admit that I didn't have another hamster following this incident, but now, years later, I am preparing to welcome a hamster into my life. The joy they give during their short lifetime outweighs the heartbreak caused by their passing. It would be a shame for you and your son's hamster experience to be forever marred by this tragedy.

I am hopeful that someone here may be able to explain what may have happened in the hope of providing some closure, but mainly I just want to say how sorry I am to hear that you have had such a sad loss. Thinking of you all. xoxo

Thank you for your reply, thats what completely confused us! She seemed so healthy and was still charging around the night before, it was such a sudden change if id have known anything was wrong the day before i wouldve taken her to the vet straight away, im trying to encourage my boy by telling him this wont happen to every one so im.glad to hear that its rare!
Such a horrible way for our little fluffball to go, they really are so delicate, she was a feisty one, i remember when the employee got her for us she actually dropped her as she was so fast, and she almost escaped on her way home 😂😂
I wish you all.the best with your new one it sounds like she will be really loved 😊 x

Hampy looks like she was a real character!

I'm sorry for your loss. It's especially tough when they died so young and in an upsetting way. From how you've described it, it sounds like something sadly went catastrophically and unpredictably wrong inside her. The water bottle and cheerio wouldn't have caused that amount of bleeding. Even if you'd been home when it happened, I suspect there wouldn't have been anything you could do. It's not always possible to know why a hamster died but I don't think anything you did caused this.

I agree with Otaku that it isn't a common thing, and that you were very unlucky. I have 40-50 hamsters at one time and it's rare that this happens here.

Run free, Hampy xxx

She really was! And loved to get out of her cage and sit on my shoulder like a parrot while i do stuff, i was really unsure about hamsters until we got her she was so perfect and it was stress relieving just cuddling with her at the end of the day, it was my sons pet but i got so attatched to her too!
We have a place where we are going to put her box of ashes and we have found the perfect picture of her to print off and put in a frame above the box as we want to remember her, ive just told my boy she died in her sleep, thankfully he didnt see the blood as i cleaned her up, the worst part i think is that weve had a few relatives pass over so i got hampy as sort of a support for us as well, which she did really well.
Thank you for your kind replies i just felt so guilty and wanted to make sure this never happens again, its also helping to talk about it. People seem to think its just a hamster just get another one for £10 but thats not the point she was like family to us xx

I am so sorry to hear about hampy. They are all such characters and soon take up so much room in our hearts. They are family and it is devastating when they leave us, especially in circumstances like yours. Try and remember the happy times you had and how much hampy was loved. She would have known how much you all loved her and she clearly loved you all too. That is precious. X
