Unhappy Help Please! Blood in cage but no source?

Hi all,

So, I have a new(ish) hamster. She's about 8 weeks old and this morning, as usual, she seemed fine. She's still nervous and tends to spook easily but this morning she slept without waking when I got up for the first time, seemed to have been eating and had had a little to drink. I popped up to check on her about lunchtime, and then at about 5, and she was all fine, but I've come up to bed and there is now what looks like blood in the cage!

I've tried to give her a look over (She's still not been tamed so it's difficult to pick her up without her squirming out) and from what I can tell, she hasn't got any cuts or anything. She's long-haired too, so I would expect there to be some blood on her fur if there was, but I can't see any.

I've also noticed that she's done a couple of poops that are softer than usual. Still formed, not watery, but softer.

Someone suggested it could be because of the colouring in her treats, but she wasn't doing this until today and she's been having those treats for a week now?

She's also not appearing to be drinking much, and it seems like she tries to drink from the bottle, then sniffs around it as though she's looking for another way in. I've checked and it's still working, so not sure whether this is just her being curious?

Attached pictures of the blood/treats to help!!

I would lay off the hearts just in case it is them. If you can't see any blood on her actual body anywhere can you you try picking her up with maybe like a little bit of a kitchen roll or a towel so even if she's being squirmy it might be easier to keep a grip of her and have a look around the genital area and see if you can spot any blood. You could also try putting your hamster in a clear container or glass of something and look up from underneath and see if you can see anything. Bearing in mind that sometimes they can clean it away before you can see it so just try keep checking on it to see if you can see anything, if in doubt I would take her to the vets straight away.

It looks like staining in her urine to me. And it looks the same color as her treats. I too would lay off of those, but for good.

Commercial treats are often not very healthy and should not be given on a regular basis, if ever. The fact that her urine is stained with it means she is eating a lot of it, and probably not eating as much of her regular, healthy diet she should be eating.

She seems to be doing okay, and I haven't seen any other patches around the cage and she's still clear of blood. She's been running around the cage more too so I'm hoping it was just the treats! I've switched her onto normal and dried carrots now so hopefully it was just that and she'll be okay! thank you for your help

Glad she is ok. She could have hoarded the treats and pee'd on them. I found what looked like diarrhoea in a hamster's wheel once and got concerned, but when I looked closely it was some food that had been pee'd on. I think if it was blood there would be some in her nest. But keep an eye on her pee corner in case it is from her urine. It looks like that is her pee corner on the photos - is that right?

Are those treats the tiny friends ones? If so I am not aware of any problems with the colouring causing pee to be stained. Healthy treats they enjoy are pumpkin seeds, the occasional half a walnut (out of the shell). They also need a chewstick as it helps keep their teeth from getting too long. The ones with food stuck on are usually popular for chewing. Rosewood make some sugar free ones and I occasionally give a Vitakraft one (I don't give those too often as they have honey in - sweet things can lead to tooth decay).

It's always a bit nerve-wracking in the early days - you often don't see a hamster drinking but she will be drinking and the bottle doesn't seem to go down much. The main thing is checking the bottle lets water out ok. I check that every day when putting food out by tapping the spout underneath with my finger to check the water is coming out ok. It doesn't do any harm to have two water bottles, just in case one packs up. I had a lot of problems with water bottles at first - leaking or jamming and not letting water out but I use the Ferplast drinky 75ml ones now and they're good.
