Default Watching eye problem.

I noted an eye issue today and I'll be watching it a few days to see how it progresses. I noted NO drainage and took a slightly damp cotton ball to clean it. Fluffy is nearing 2 years old and I'm planning on Fluffy's living will to be conservative since he has mostly been away from any human contact, but I will weigh each condition based on it's merit and think of what's the best for his comfort.
I'm thinking he has a loss of hair in that region and will watch for signs and symptoms of infection. He might have layed in something and less hair in that region might amplify the mess.
Anyone have anything to add regarding eye issues and hamsters nearing end of life?

Hello. Are you able to provide any other photo of fluffy's eye?

Our little winter white hybrid has had an ongoing eye problem that looks very similar to Fluffy's.

Initially it was diagnosed as an eye infection as the area around the eye was pink and swollen and the eye had a white discharge.

Long story short, it turns out she had a bone infection caused by a mouth abscess that was causing the swelling in the general area of her eye and the eye discharge.

She didn't seem at all bothered by it but has been on oral antibiotics for three months now and thank God is looking a bit better.

Please consider taking Fluffy to an exotic animal vet and ask if his mouth can be examined for an abscess.

Thanks for the info. I'm going to watch it a day because it could have just been sticky eye. At Fluffy's age (2 years) I would maybe pass on oral antibiotics because antibiotics can cause loose stools but I would be ok with eye drops, but will wait and see how my cleaning away with the cotton ball changes his condition after 24 hours. I got a place lined up tomorrow if no improvement.

I'm a nurse for humans and I think I'll be ok for a wait and see.

Good plan. As long as Fluffy doesn't look like he's in distress, that's the main alarm signal for urgent medical attention. We have something called 'rooibos' tea here in South Africa which is great for eye infections.

Brew it and let it cool then wipe the eye with it on a cotton ball. It works for our horse and our little hamsters. I will check if it has another name in the USA.

Just checked and Rooibos tea is available in San Diego under the name 'organic rooibos'.

Took Fluffy to the Vet and they gave me some antibiotic ointment to apply 2 x day for 7 days. At 2 years old Fluffy is active and eats well. His weight was 66.4 at the office I'm probably looking at Fluffy wrong. I was thinking him as a 90 year old equivalent at 2 when they sometimes live to 3, so at 2 they probably closer to 60 equivalent, since many humans die around 60.

I also switched to Carefresh from Aspen shavings and have dropped the bedding height down to 2 inches so I can find him easily for his eye medication. My Aspen shavings had quite a bit of dust and that may have contributed to his eye problem.

Ty Vierville for the info you added. The vet checked his pouches while I was there and hopefully ruled out what your hamster had.

I think Fluffy is improving.
