Robo bald patch - mites? Fungal infection?
Hi there I’m really hoping someone can help.
I took my robo to the vet about a month ago as I noticed he had a bald patch on his back. The vet said that it could either be mites, a fungal infection or skin cancer (but that’s very rare). She treated him for mites and his fur appeared to grow back. I noticed as I was cleaning out his tank this week, he developed another bald patch near to where the bald patch was before. I went to the vets today and upon inspection the bald patch had grown worst and his whole backside is near enough gone. She treated him for mites again and has given me some medicine to give him everyday. I haven’t seen any mites in his bedding and he hasn’t appeared to be scratching himself excessively. What does everyone think it is? I’m so worried. Should i disinfect his cage and remove any wooden items as he has a completely natural set up?
Pics attached...

Re: Robo bald patch - mites? Fungal infection?
Hi. Hard to tell but he appears to have fur loss on his back legs as well. I think you should see an exotic vet (google exotic vets in your area - there should be one not far away). They know a lot more about hamsters - a lot of vets don’t know that much about hamster conditions. Did the vet do a skin scraping to test for mites before treating?
They can get fur kids for all kinds of reasons. Our Robo started losing fur when he had cancer but his skin was not smooth like that but very lumpy like nodules. Diet can cause fur loss if they haven’t had enough protein in their mix and various other illness can cause it plus it can be normal in old age and older robos can look quite ropey and raggy. How old is he?

Hi there, she offered treatment first and then if after 2 weeks no improvement she will do a skin scrape, so we're not sure exactly what it is yet or what's causing it. I haven't seen any mites at all. He still appears to be eating well, drinking well etc. He gets plenty of protein, meal worms, nuts etc.

Hi, what did the vet say? How does the skin scrape work (is it done quickly?) Did you hamster get better?

From what I know a skin scrape is where they scrape a small scraping of the first few layers of skin. They put it under a microscope to see if there are mites or for another skin reason. They are relatively quick and won’t cause much pain. It is A bit uncomfortable for them. My dog had to get one and he didn’t seem to care (but he is a lot bigger so it might be different for a hamster)
