Default 2 Hamster Deaths in a week :(

Hello. In the past, week two of my hamsters have passed away, a 7 month old robo and a 3 year old winter white. I was wondering if some mold in a small airtight lunchbox which had be left for 3 days could’ve caused this or if this is purely coincidental. I understand that the dead of the winter white was probably due to old age as i found him sleeping peacefully underneath his hideout but my robo, who seemed perfectly healthy, behind its seesaw. Any help would be much appreciated, izzie

Did they have access to this mouldy lunchbox? Was it opened near their cages?

At this time of year it might be linked to the temperature drop. Could be something else environmental (I always recommend checking your carbon monoxide alarm) Or it could be a complete coincidence, you never know. But without more information I don't think anyone is going to be able to give you a real answer.

I am sorry for your losses

So sorry to hear this. Agree with Shannon. Do you have a carbon monoxide alarm? They look like smoke alarms. It can affect a hamster before anyone else (like canaries). Mould isn't good for hamsters but I doubt it would cause sudden death like this. If the food had gone mouldy it could release some kind of toxins possibly but I don't think a hamster would eat something that smelled a bit mouldy anyway.

Cold weather is also an issue but it's not that cold yet (depending where you are) and assume you have heating on at some point during the day. You can get a digital room thermometer for reassurance. I try not to let it drop below 16 degrees in the room the hamsters are in and ideally in winter it should be 20 degrees but 16 degrees isn't really cold.

It could be coincidence but does seem unusual that they should both die at the same time (was it on the same day?). If there was time between them passing then it is likely to be just one of those things. A hamster can have a sudden heart attack. You say they were both under something when they died though which suggests they may have been aware of being near death possibly.

I am so sorry this has happened. I don't think it is anything you've done but it's good to check a few environmental things just in case.

Could your robo have had a fall? They are so easily injured so fall risks always need to be looked out for and lower cages are best for them to reduce this risk. What cage was he in?

Thankyou for your replies! I have a carbon monoxide monitor and there has been no signs of
it present in the room, the hamsters were 7 meters away from the lunch box and had no access to it, my other hamster that I still have is perfect healthy at the moment and is showing no signs of illness or disease (he is a winter white and almost two). My robo lived in the large zoo one with no levels, so
I don’t think he fell. I think it’s just an awful coincidence, thankyou so much for your help, izzie
