Default Clindomycin?

Hello. My winter white hybrid has had health issues since the day we got her. Initially she was misdiagnosed with an eye infection and after two courses of eye drop medication the vets said there was nothing more they could do.

We took her for a second opinion and the second vet -who is very caring- diagnosed an oral abscess which had spread to become a facial bone infection, hence the swollen eye. This was confirmed with x-rays This was three months ago.

She was put on Petcam (metacam) and Purbac but this initially worked and then her condition regressed. She was then put on Clindomycin and once again her condition improved but then regressed. She still has three weeks of the six-week course of Clindomycin left but it just seems not to be working.

She has been so good throughout this all...taking her eye drops and twice daily syringes of medicine so well but I'm at my wits end as it just seems like nothing is working to clear up the infection.

Has anyone had a similar experience?

Hello Vierville. I have a winter white too (although not a hybrid). After we had had Theo (female) for about 2-3 months, we noticed one eye looked larger than the other. The vet diagnosed an infection or - less likely for a young hamster - a tumour. A course of antibiotics did nothing to help, and with the eye looking larger still and pale-coloured, she was diagnosed with possible glaucoma and given eye drops. She is blind in that eye, and we were told that there was a possibility she may lose the eye altogether. The eye drops didn't seem to make any difference, and the distress it was causing her was simply unbearable to us. She hasn't had any x-rays, and the glaucoma is not a definite diagnosis.

Wind forward several months and nothing has changed. But throughout it all she has remained happy, alert, eating, drinking and playing normally, so we just monitor her carefully and enjoy her company.

If your hammy is the same - normal behaviour and happy in herself, it may be best to try to accept that there is a problem that cannot be resolved. When you say she regressed, what happened? Did the appearance of the eye change? It's hard for us to see our hammies with problems, and of course we want them to be 100% healthy, but if she is her normal self in other ways, this won't stop her having a good and happy life.

Hello Petite,

Thank you for your reply. Your little hammy's story is very similar to ours...the eye drops caused her a huge amount of distress and we persevered for ten days (the full course) then stopped eye drops when the vet suggested a second course of the same drops that were in any case having no effect. She would hide in her corner under her wheel and wouldn't come out after each dose...it was heartbreaking.

We then took her to the second vet who found the oral abscess. She had anaesthetic and he drained it and that was when she was x-rayed and put onto Purbac and Metacam. She was only about 6 months old and he also said the bone anomaly on the x-ray could be a tumor except that it had occurred together with the abscess so was more likely a bone infection. Her one eye -the affected one- initially did look smaller but during the times when her condition has looked almost normal with no inflammation ariund the eye, it looks exactly the same as the healthy one.

I think that in her case the swelling around the eye has the effect of making it look smaller.

The actual eye itself looks healthy...black and shiny and not cloudy or opaque and she definitely can see out of it.

You are so right though in saying that quality of life is of the utmost importance. She still runs around (crazily!), climbs on everything, eats very well and does not appear to be in any way affected by her eye so as long as that is the case, we and her vet agree that she's ok.

Good luck with little Theo.
