Exclamation Escaped Hamster!

Hi everyone, I'm looking for some help

My syrian hamster Tofu escaped her cage 3 days ago, and there is no sign of her anywhere in my house. I have left food out in every room and nothing has been touched. No droppings anywhere, no scratches, no noises. She's just gone!

I've got a bucket trap set up, and a ramp going up to her cage which she shouldn't be able to get out of if she goes back in as I have emptied it out, apart from some smelly treats (she has a diy linnmon cage). I have checked all my walls for holes and I can't see anything, however I know how crafty they can be so I'm not ruling that out.

I'm devastated. I don't even want to go to work, I just want to stay at home and look for her but I have no idea where to start as she could be anywhere! What's worrying me most is that she has never been a quiet ham, she was always scratching, digging & chewing, but I've heard nothing. She loved her food and her wheel but nothing has been touched in 3 nights now.

If anyone has any other suggestions of what I can do to even pinpoint where she is it would be much appreciated! Or if anyone has had their ham return after days of nothing it would be great to hear for some hope that I will see her again.

You always hear stories of hams coming back after days or even weeks. There is never no hope!

What a lot of people recommend is sprinkling flour lightly on the floor, this way you can see footprints if she disturbs it. Only you will know where is best to put it tho. Maybe near the sofa (hams have been stuck in sofas before), or under the fridge, in cupboards even.

And keep up the bucket traps with smelly treats in, do several if you can and use flour around these too.

As an aside; how the heck did she get out of a linnmon?

Oh I'll definitely be giving the flour a try. Thank you!

I have no idea! We did leave the lid off for a couple of hours after her playtime. But the top was 2x a syrian length away from the substrate so I never thought she would get out. The only thing I can think of is that she climbed up the back of her wheel, as she used to do that when we had her in a detolf. But she used the top rail in the detolf to hoist herself up, so I didn't think she could get out that way in the linnmon!

I think that's probably a decent guess. Honestly the lid of my Linnmon is on hinges and is never left open just because it's habit but I didn't think realistically she could get out. Reassessing now obviously!

Just want to add, are you leaving water out for her as well as food?

It was completely my fault, I knew she liked to climb so I should have known better than to leave it off.

Yes I have left out her water bowl and I have been putting some fresh cucumber in the bowls of food every day too.

Underestimating them is a very easy mistake to make.

Is there still no sign of her touching the food or water? I think you're doing all the right things, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that she wises up and comes home

So.. my neighbour just came to my door and asked me if I had lost a hamster.
SHE WENT TO MY NEIGHBOURS HOUSE!!!
No sign of her for 4 days, because she wasn't even in the house! And I have no idea how she got there..

My neighbour has fed her and given her water so she seems fine, just a bit dirty. Do you think I should take her to the vet straight away?
I checked her over and nothing seems a miss, I was going to just let her sleep and calm down first as I'm not sure how much sleep she's had.

I'm also going to try and find a new cage for her, we noticed that she has been chewing on the wood of her linnmon and I'm worried she could actually get through it. I have put the glass shelves from the detolf over them for now so she cant chew any further.
And that lid is never coming off with her in it again!!

WOW! Thank goodness shes back after that little trip! Your poor neighbour must have had quite the shock lol

I personally wouldn't take her to the vet unless shes showing some symptoms of something (lethargy, loose stool, shivering, basically anything out of the ordinary) but yes definitely let herself get settled first and then just keep a very close eye. Poor wee woman probably got much more of an adventure than she wanted!

Depending on where she chews she could get right through the cardboard section of the table very quickly so good thinking!
