Default Very strong urine smell.

I have Sofie in a bin cage, and cleaned it last Wed. It reeks of strong urine. I cant change it weekly, to expensive. She seems fine, eating and drinking. She is drinking more water lately. Is this bad or a sign of illness?

If the bin cage is large enough you shouldn't need to clean it that often. Just spot clean where she is weeing if you can. I forget, is she a syrian? How old is she? A strong urine smell and drinking more water could be a sign of an infection or something else. I would be cleaning the toilet area out and seeing how it smells after that, and keeping an eye on the drinking. Also are you able to pick her up and smell her, if she doesn't smell like she normally does, i.e. a bit or a lot more stinky, I would also be looking at going to the vets. Also is there any sign of puss coming out of her bottom/female bits?

She might be peeing on things to mark them if you did a full cage clean. It’s best to just do partial cleans so something always smells familiar. Is there a particularly smelly pee area? It is possible she could have a urine infection but it does seem to be since the cage clean.

She is a dwarf. She is about 6 months old. Her bottom is fine. She has been biting the last couple days.

When I clean the bin, I leave some of the cleaner bedding to mix with the new. This is the 2nd time the cage has been real smelly.

Good point. Is it definitely a urine smell? They do come on heat every 4 days! I have heard it is a bit of a musky smell and some smell more than others. A bin cage is likely to hold aroma more as well. I realise you've just made this lovely bin cage though. One of the advantages of barred cages is the much better ventilation.

Is she a Syrian or a dwarf - I can't remember?
