Haha! Well to be fair I have no idea how to sex a hamster either (probably not even a Chinese or a Syrian). I've heard a lot about improper sexing that I wouldn't be surprised either, but long as it's not causing him any complications then it's fine by me. He's quite good at hiding pain because he acted very normal even when his back wounds were still fresh.

Boys certainly have a bulge and dwarves aren't easy to sex. Looks more boy than girl to me.

A friend's Herman used to be Hermione until she had a closer look......

Thanks everyone! Well it's a relief that it's not some weird medical complication. Lesson learnt, try to avoid gender specific names insofar as possible if you don't personally know how to sex your hamsters, lol.

It's gonna be weird changing our perception of him, haha. I've started cooing "good boy" to him instead of "good girl". Really, thank you everyone, this was really helpful.

At the end of the day hamsters don't seem at all bothered when we accidentally think they're male or female, so I don't see it as a big issue. I could see it as a much bigger issue with other species though, since you'd have the risk of housing a male and female together which leads to the obvious baby problem(which is part of my anxiety with future guinea pigs, but something I've already mentally prepared for enough to feel comfortable anyways).

Yeah, glad he's not housed together in the same cage as my other female (well, she's got a sleek frame, I don't see any balls on her and I've had her for a few months more than the male one, so I'm presuming she's truly female). While I would love the idea of having more baby hamsters, I don't have enough space and time to give so many hamsters proper housing plus the attention each of them would deserve, as I'm already stretching it with two bin cages.

Amusing to find out he was improperly sexed, but that's ok. We (the humans and the Robo) will just have to deal with it, haha. Happy to report that apart from the gender confusion, the wounds on his back seem to have healed up well and he's started growing back some of his fluffy fur in the shaved areas.

I cannot thank everyone on this forum enough. <3

I personally don't like scruffing as it freaks me out because I believe they are susceptible to having their eyes pop out if scruffed incorrectly(?). Having said that my vet does it with no concerns.

Our one little one is on long-term oral liquid antibiotics and we syringe her her medication twice a day. If you find it difficult to do this, try getting mealworms and cut the head off, them let the hamster eat the 'guts' which will leave a hollow inside the worm. Inject the medication into the hollow inside the worm and let the hamster eat the worm. Its gross but it works!
