Kitchen roll? How do you do that? As in, wait till she gets inside and then scruff her along with the roll while she is still in it?

The main issue I have is initiating the scruff (getting a better grip in the first place). After she has been scruffed then I think we are able to maintain the scruff.

Hi there. I had to give antibiotics to our robo not long ago and it can stress them terribly trying to catch and scruff them every day - I had a very useful that worked a treat. The reason the vets say give it directly is because it is important they get the dose every day or the bugs can proliferate if the antibiotics are started then missed or a lower dose. And baytril tastes foul so isn’t well disguised with food. The tip I had worked really well - which was to put the drop onto a tiny bit of country hunter dog food (that was the only dog food that worked). The beef flavour one. It is meaty flavoured and our Robo, as predicted, went absolutely bonkers for it and started pushing the plate around every day wanting more. This avoids the stress and gets the meds down. About a quarter of a teaspoon of it no more. It works out a bit expensive as an opened pouch needs to be kept in the fridge and then only used twice more then discarded (unless you have a dog to give it to). The hamster will eat all of it if the amount is small enough. I just put the medicine drop on top of the food and it was still all eaten up daily. I’ll link it below - Amazon sell it but don’t know how available it is otherwise.

There are only four pouches in the box - ie enough for 12 days of medicine - so you may need two boxes in case vet keeps your Robo on antibiotics a bit longer.

Thanks for this and for the link! Turned out my Robo loves her oral medicine actually so my only issue with that is preventing her from eating the syringe itself in her excitement. But your information is very useful and I will remember to do that if I need to keep her on a type of oral medicine that she dislikes, in future. Thanks so much!

My main concern is that the vet told me to clean her wound area with some cleansing solution, and I know first-hand it is a medical disaster if layer after layer of cream is applied every day without washing off a wound (happened to me). I really need to scruff her to clean the wounds. I know it causes stress to her but I feel like I don't have any options (and I still have not succeeded in cleaning her till now!)

I am so stressed up that I ended up having a nightmare yesterday and talked in my sleep (for the first time ever). I was telling my husband in my sleep to stop stressing her out. Woke up to see him peering at me and thinking I must have gone bonkers.

We all go a bit hamster bonkers sometimes You clearly haven't seen my "moth" thread! Now that really drove me bonkers. Moth infestation from hamster food. Hence I always freeze all hamster food for a week now. Prevents it.

When i said have a bit of the kitchen roll, I meant the paper not the actual cardboard roll bit from the middle - not sure if that was clear!

hold the kitchen paper and then go to scruff the hamster with it in your hand - i know someone else on here tried this method with a kitchen towel i think it was. It just means you can get a better grip and hopefully your hamster will be unable to move as much and you can do what you need to do. goodluck

Eh, I don't really get moths here but I keep my hamster's food in "human-food" containers, so that it remains fresh and cripsy (well, I can only hope so, I haven't actually nibbled on her mealworms to try them out myself).

Oh, sorry I got confused about that! That sounds like a pretty good idea actually, and definitely worth a try for anyone who needs to scruff their hamster.

Unfortunately we just couldn't do it - maybe it was one try too many in my situation. My normally sweet fur baby started going wild and kept aggressively attacking my husband's gloved hand/ the kitchen towel. So for the sake of her mental health, we decided not to scruff her anymore, and also, to give the external medications a rest for a day. We put her back in her cage and she dug a burrow to one of her underground hideouts immediately, probably planning not to come out for the next 50 years.

I'm really sad that I stressed her out this much, and I don't want to push it anymore. We have the patience to keep trying, but I think she doesn't. I'll keep on with the oral medication first as she really loves that, and hope that somehow her wounds will be cleaned automatically by constant contact with the substrate (I've noticed she doesn't really lick it that much). I don't think I want to give her access to a sand bath either as it might be abrasive and bad for her wound. I feel so guilty that I can't even clean her wound properly.

P/s: Left her for the night with plenty of food and found her back out in the open by morning, with a brand new mini hoard piled up on her favourite ceramic plate that she open-nests on. This little one is mostly an open-nest hamster, and I'm glad the mental anguish didn't drive her underground permanently. She took her oral medication happily, then suddenly remembered we were "enemies" and sped away after that.

Aw how stressful for you all.

Would it be at all feasable to somehow spray the cream onto her wound?

Has the cotton bud idea been any good?

Roborovskis are so speedy!!!

I don't mind the stress (it's minimal for me) if it means my fur baby will get well again.

Spraying cream is a really good tip. The cotton bud idea did work at first for the cream, but it's not enough because I can't clean her wounds properly. I am hesitant to apply layer after layer of cream on her without being able to clean it off the next day as that sounds like a medical disaster. Do you think I should still go ahead and hope that the substrate will clean it automatically/ she will lick clean her wounds?

The vet says it's ok if she licks the cream, but I still don't quite like her eating it... now I am torn between hoping she cleans it herself and hoping she doesn't eat things she's not supposed to eat.

It's the stress on her that has been quite bad, and I haven't been able to give her any external medication/ clean her wounds for a few days already because I don't want her to go mental. She sort of snapped when we went for the towel/ glove trick and was unnaturally aggressive, so we had to stop (I'm sure other people can still try those, they are good tips. It's just that in my case, maybe we tried too many times).

I can't even see that clearly, but the wounds look kind of pinkish, and she's a bit whiffy - it's been more than half a month since the injury. I really really hope she's going to make a full recovery soon, as she is at least taking her meds very happily. I hope she's just whiffy because she hasn't had her sandbath or she is a little stressed and scenting stuff, not because her wounds are still bad.

You could phone the vet, explain the situation and ask for advice.

Didn't she say that the wound is healing up well?
Which leaves the question of where the whiffiness is coming from.

I do know what you mean by having to clean the wound before applying more cream.
