Unwell hammie!
Hi! I have a male syrian hamster, around 6 months old, and recently i've noticed a change in behavior. I'm taking him to the vets once they open, but i was wondering if there is anything i can do while i wait.
Gigi (my hamster) usually wakes up around 8-9pm, but recently he hasn't been waking up until 10:30/11pm. I try to wake him up gently - lights still off, gently rustling his bedding/putting food out, but he just opens his eyes a little as if saying "nope, im sleeping, dont wake me" and he doesn't move out of his bed.
He has also recently been making chattering noises, they sound a bit like " t t t t t t t t" and every so often i see his upper abdomen expand at the sides and then contract quickly, as if he is gasping or hiccupping.
I'm really worried about him, is there anything i can do?

Re: Unwell hammie!
It's not unusual for hamsters to wake around 22.30/23.00, mine do.
The chattering sound i have heard from my Syrian and usually means "go away and leave me alone".
Don't know about the hiccups but personally, i wouldn't wake a hamster and wait until he wakes up by himself.
What did the vet say? Is your hamster ok?

The vet said all is fine, but don't wake him up, he might just be a late waker and have gotten up earlier when he was younger. I also got him a new climbing frame, for more stimulation, in case that's why he is sleeping more, and i switched to a new bedding, and his hiccuping seems to have stopped. I'm also trying to sort of re-tame him, just because lately he seems to be doing the chattering sound when i put my hand it the cage, so i've been giving him treats of my hand etc.
Thanks for all your help, i'm not worrying so much now!
