Default Swollen Scent Gland - Winter White

Hi Everyone.

Our Marshmallow has seemed to have developed quite a swollen scent gland on his stomach, seems to be on the left side of his gland, we have had an issue like this before, except it didn't get as swollen as it has now, which went away after a few days, but now it has come back and it is bigger.

There have been no noticeable behavior changes, hes still very active and social.

Have any of you had any similar experiences with these guys scent glands?

They can get blocked scent glands and also infected scent glands. If you gently squeeze it does any stuff come out? Try bathing the gland with some saline (1pt cooled boiled water and a teaspoon of salt and see if you can encourage draining. If it doesn't go down then he may need some antibiotics from the vets.

it seems to be an ear wax type of thing, completely blocked.. It wasnt really budging with the saline, so I used a pair of disinfected tweezers and managed to get some of it out carefully, so its not completely blocked now. But he was getting very distressed. So we will leave him for now and maybe have another go later, or maybe with the saline drenched area now he may clean the rest of it out himself. Will update you as we progress

The swelling to the side is not normal and it does look to be infected. I'd have him seen by the vets. Keep the cage very clean when the gland is open like that and bathe a few times a day. I wouldn't advise poking it with tweezers or squeezing too hard as if there is a pocket of pus in there it could rupture inside and cause things to get worse.

I can assure you I didn't squeeze it at all, not one bit, as I am well aware of a rupture risk, I just used the tweezers(not sharp ones) to clear up the opening and then gave it a thorough cleaning. It looks alot cleaner this morning when we checked up on him. If there is no change by tomorrow we will take him through to the vet. It does seem like the wax is all coming from that side, when I was clearing it up from the opening it seemed to come from that direction.

Just an update, the gland area is now looking alot better (cleaner) after the clean out, and I think the swelling is going down, although very slowly. However I think we are going to take him to the vet anyway for a checkup just in case.

There doesn't appear to be any redness or bleeding or anything else concerning, the swollen area seems to be quite soft as well.

Will update once we have made the trip to the vet.

So we visited the vet and it was very distressing for him, he was not happy with being checked out and actually bit the vet! then had to get a baytril injection, which he wasnt happy about either! But we have been prescribed oral baytril for the next few days which we will give to him mixed in a drop(only a small drop) of "kefir" milk which seems to be the only way to get him to take it due to the horrible taste!

Vet asked for a follow up visit next week.
