Default Hot weather advice for Syrian hamster

Hi everyone

I recently got my third Syrian and realised he is in quite a hot room, although not in direct sun. There's very hot weather forecast next week and I am a bit worried. I can't easily move him and wondered if hot weather has been an issue for people? I read on the internet they will struggle above 26 degrees c. I don't remember my previous hamsters being bothered, never even thought of it, but I think that house possibly stayed a bit cooler. Does anyone have any tips? How did people cope in the heatwave last year?

Thanks!

I lowered Lunas cage to the floor - and i also have a fan which is not blowing direct on to the cage, but kind of in front of it. I kept the curtains drawn and made sure doors and windows opened but not so she was in a draught.

A tip I got off this forum, you can try to place a ceramic cup on its side inside the cage to make an excellent cooling hideout for your hamster. If you have two cups, you can place one in the fridge so that it is chilled, then swap them out when one grows warm. Your hamster will love a chilled cup.

If you have chinchilla sand, you can chill it in the fridge and place it in a tub for your hamster to roll around in.

Here's a DIY cooling pad idea you can try out: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=p552YzdB2lM

I would recommend you prepare ceramic, aluminium, stone surfaces for it to lie on.

What temperature are we talking about for your area? It has gotten up to 35 Celsius on average in my area, and I would definitely appreciate more tips on cooling off from everyone else as well!

Aside from keeping a window open and closing the blinds, i cover the top of my hamster's cage with a thin sheet of cardboard to keep it dark and cool. He lives in a bar cage so still gets good ventilation with the cover on.

I am also making preparations for the coming week. Curtains closed when the sun is on the window for sure but I am also thinking of windows closed as the air outside will be a lot hotter than inside. We have a small fan too that can be switched on but not too close to the cage. I have empty milk containers filled with water and similar in the freezer ready to place in front of the fan and / or on top of the cage and keep rotating them. It will be a hobbit like existence for a few days for the benefit of Maestro!

I use a coaster that's marble, that my hamsters can lay or just stand on if she gets warm.
Sure you could use ceramic, and tiles could work too.
Also, small amounts of ice chips in water can make it more palatable, I change the water daily especially in the warm weather.
Ceramic hides are nice too, I use large candle holders, and my hamster loves to sit in a groom. Even found one in a charity shop big enough for my syrian (she's a big girl).
Ice bottles near the cage can help keep them cool where they sleep, no too cold its unoutable or unsafe.

Another thing i do is that i offer my hamster a small piece of cucumber or water melon during the day in hot weather. He won't come out to drink, not as far as i've noticed anyway but a sniffing nose will appear almost instantly to retrieve a chilled bit of something watery when placed in his egg cup by the entrance of his house.

That works here too Ria. It's a very good way of keeping them hydrated when it's hot.

Thank you all for the helpful tips - much appreciated! I love the idea of the ceramic cup. For now I have moved him to a cooler room as well.
