That is great to hear! I will definitely ask the vet for something, even if its just preventative, for pain. Thank you for the info.

Just a follow up, my beloved little old man passed away today.

The tumor that I mentioned in the above thread did grow but two new ones developed in the last month, one of which grew very rapidly.

He was over two years old and had been noticeably slowing down lately, not as active and not running on his wheel as much but in every other respect he seemed normal until the last few days, including having his usual appetite.

Its been very hot here-around 35 Celsius the last week- so he had begun sleeping outside his nest in a hollow in the bedding and was only moving between his hollow and his little house-not interested in clmbing his pipes.

We were unsure if this was due to the extreme heat but he was getting weaker and more unsteady on his feet.

Last night he really looked like he had no energy and was extremely weak, he didn't want his food which is the first time ever that he refused food and he was just lying there. When he moved, it was very slowly and unsteadily. We discussed having to make the hardest decision of taking him to the vet to be put to sleep today which I was very worried to do as he would be so stressed to be transported and handled by a stranger in his last moments but this morning, just after I left for work my wife phoned me to say that he had passed away.

When I left, he was lying on his bedding in the middle of his cage, breathing erratically and I just knew his time was very near.

I am so grateful that I got the chance to whisper to him to thank him for all the joy he has brought me and to tell him that he is an extremely special little man and that he will never be forgotten.

We are not sure if the tumors ultimately were the cause of his death or if it was simply old age.

There is a huge void where his cage used to be but an even huger one in my heart...he's only been gone 12 hours but I miss him so much already.

Rest in Peace little Admiral. You will never ever be forgotten.

I know that saying I’m sorry isn’t gonna help the pain. It is never easy to lose a pet. It sounds like Nelson lived a good rest of his life and crossed the rainbow bridge happily. Whenever I think of my hamster who passed half a year ago, it helps to remember that he passed peacefully in his sleep and that he is in a better place. I think you made the right decision to not get surgery. I hope you don’t suffer too much.
