Default Is my hammy overweight/putting on weight too fast?

Hey guys,

I got my hammy 6 weeks ago at 11 weeks old. His name is Pudding and he is a winter white. (I'm based in Ireland so not sure how the hybrids work over here)

I first weighed him at about 12 weeks old and he was 47grams. I've just weighed him again today so he is 17 weeks old and he now weighs 74grams.

Is this normal weight gain for a hammy of his species and age?

He's exercising fine every night on the wheel and he spends plenty time burrowing and exploring his cage (a detolf).

I definitely went a little mad on the treats for the first while but I've swapped them out for fresh veg instead the last two weeks.

Any thoughts or advice totally welcome!

Pic attached for cuteness and to show how chubby he is. Defo living up to his name! His pouches are pretty full though 😂😂

Lol!! He looks like a snowball with ears. So cute and happy looking this little Pudding. I have no idea what weight he should be as i have a Syrian hamster. Funny thing is, after weighing my hamster the first time and he weighed in at 210g! i started a thread called "Is my hamster fat" and was reassured that he wasn't and that its better to have a chubby hamster with reserves to fall back on to just in case they ever get ill. My guess is that Pudding is just fine. He's lovely!

Aw thanks Ria, he is super cute. He is within a normal weight but it's the rate of weight gain that is a little concerning.

He’ll be a hybrid unless he’s from a registered breeder, hybrids vary A LOT in size. My largest is also 74g and my smallest is 42g. As long as he’s healthy and active theres nothing to worry about

He's beautiful! 74 grams of cuteness!

My little girl winter white hybrid is 7 months old and she weighs 29 grams. She's on the small end of the spectrum.

Does he have a wheel? How about a running ball?

I find that even a usually 'lazy' hamster, when put into a running ball will run and run all over the room...they seem to love it!

I hope that helps!

He is very cute Vierville.

Oh wow, she's half the size of Pudding!

He has a wheel and he uses it every night. I also let him out for a run around my bed for about 15 minutes every night/every other night so he's getting plenty of exercise.

He's probably just still growing, but better to be safe than sorry!
