I’m sending prayers and positive vibes. This is very traumatising and stressful...be kind to yourself and take it each hour as it comes.

Keep us posted.

Sorry, I'm new to this so I don't know much... but please do keep us updated and I am totally hoping it turns out fine for Luna. If it helps, do keep in mind that Luna is already fortunate to have a caring owner like you.

Thank you all for your kind messages. It means a lot.
Well, my friend was planning on taking me to the vets tonight with Luna. but when I woke up at 4.45 this morning I could see blood on lunas upper body/top of leg(arm) area. So I got a vets appointment first thing. Turns out it was injection burn - oh my lord what a fright that was, i honestly thought this is it, time to let her go.
So now the vet i saw last week and today are having a meeting with the exotics specialist vet and will get back to me today, but it does look like an ultrasound on wednesday so they can find out what is going on and then come up with a plan of action for her. and fingers x'd because of my illness they will come and pick her up for me, which makes it a lot easier for me. The vet said she was such a lovely and friendly hamster, i think he wanted to keep her there so he could have a play with her. They may also stitch up the injection burn flap thing if it needs it. although looks good and clean for now.

i tell you this is a roller coaster of emotions at the moment. I went to bed optimistic when i saw all your comments, woke up thinking this was it when i saw the blood/wound and now optimistic again. Although i do realise she is such a little thing and a little bit of an old lady now, so not expecting miracles, but just as long as she is not in pain and has a good quality of life, that is the main thing.

My friend is off to hunt down some of the dog meat for me tonight so thanks serendipity
what baby food do you recommend for a hamster? THANK YOU all.xxx

I tend to get 2 or 3 - the 4 months age ones are best as they don’t have onion and tomato or spices (mostly). My staples are - cow and gate “chicken Sunday lunch”, hipp organic “sweet squash and chicken” and Ella’s kitchen “peas peas” (the last one isn’t so popular). Most of the fruit ones contain lemon juice so I don’t get those. Sainsbury’s sell the ones I just mentioned.

What a scare - completely get the rollercoaster of emotions. Injection burn is a separate thing and I don’t see why they can’t continue with antibiotics and Metacam longer term if surgery isn’t an option. Our Robo is on long term Metacam, nearly 2 and with tumours and doing fine. Loves his Metacam in baby food and licks it all up.

I do hope there is good news from the vet. Another way of giving medicine is to mix it in a tiny amount of porridge oats. Hamsters usually love that.

turns out my luna is not daft, would not eat any dog food or baby food with either of the medicine in.
i even dipped a bit of egg (her favourite) in the medicine, she ate some then dropped it. I then tried the baby food on it's own, wolfed it down.. she's far to clever for her own good this one. On the plus side, she is running around like a lunatic tonight, like nothing is wrong with her at all. She has her moments in doing this, but not normally this long, over an hour so far continuous, no running off to hide in her house.
Thanks again everyone.

Hmm. They will usually take the Metacam in baby food as it tastes of honey. The Baytril is very hard to disguise - was it the beefy country hunter dog food? That is what worked for me. It's virtually all meat. Some others may not be strong tasting enough.

Mind you our last Syrian Charlie was like that about metacam and wouldn't touch anything that had it in (he was a very picky hamster!)

The Baytril is important to get down her each day - it may need to be syringed if she won't take it in food. ie wrap her in a blanket, tip her upside down (but not too flat, sort of upside down but upright) and gently squirt it in the side of her mouth. Drawing up a teeny bit of runny honey with the baytril in the syringe will stop it tasting so bitter. Upright so she doesn't choke on it.

Another suggestion for metacam was mixing it in a pea sized amount of runny honey on a teaspoon - she should lick it off.

Glad she's active anyway! The antibiotics must be doing some good. She may be a bit stressed after the vet visit too - they can get very active then and kind of do circuits. Hope she settles down.

Thanks for the tips - yes it was the beef dog food
i might have to try honey
in the end i gave her half the dosage from the syringe as i know she did not get the full dosage from the bits of food she was picking at.

you may be right re the activity last night as i think she wore herself out. She has not really moved since, she didn't even move when i went looking for her this morning and I ended up taking the house off her lid (i thought she was dead!) I just want to add i don't ever take her lid off to her house when she is in it, I've always wanted to make sure she felt safe in her house. But i did sneakily lift a corner today and could see she wasn't there - so i had to go looking for her. I could tell from my camera footage she hadn't been up in the morning to stock up on water and food like she does every day (normally)

She hasn't touched her water but i did give her cucumber yesterday, but I am concerned/wondering if she is just too old to be going through all of this.
I will have to see how she is tonight and after this scan tomorrow (although I am still waiting to hear from the vets re that) I will repeat all of this to the vets when they call me.
Thanks again everyone.

I was nervous for Luna when I read about the blood, I'm so glad it's not serious, and delighted to hear that she was able to actively run around. I hope the ultrasound helps the vet in deciding the next course of action for her. She sounds so sweet from your description. Please do keep us updated, and take care of yourself too. Totally rooting for you and Luna!
