Bacon smell?
Hello,
I have a female syrian hamster who is about 10 months old. Every now and then she kind of gets a bacon-ish smell. I was thinking this was related to her 3-4 day cycle and that I am just noticing the smell. My boyfriend can't smell it though when I do and I am just worried that it might be something else. But she is behaving normally and eating and drinking just fine. She did bite me today but that is only because I woke her up to check on her (I normally do not do this), so that was her only "odd" behaviour. I just want to make sure it is not wet tail or something else. Could this be possible? Should I just take her to the vet?

Re: Bacon smell?
Wet tail definitely doesn't smell like bacon. And the smell isn't even the most noticeable symptom, they just tend to look unwell (hunched back, listless, sometimes wobbly) and the "wet tail" is a euphemism for the diahhrea that make the infection dangerous so I don't think it's that.
Since it's periodic I would assume it's something to do with her heat cycles. I've never noticed much of a smell from my girls, just a stronger hamstery smell but some say it reeks so maybe people are sensitive differently or maybe they all smell a bit different? Wouldn't go to the vet with "smells like bacon sometimes" as the only symptom tho.

Re: Bacon smell?
Some people are very sensitive to the smell of a female in heat and it sounds like you are. I think it smells like 'twiglets' so yes sort of musky baconish smell I guess.
If you get used to the normal smell then you will quickly realise if something is not right and can see a vet very quickly if you suspect she is getting an infection.
