Default Help! Mites and secondary infection

My daughter has a rescue hamster who is a long haired Syrian. He is older. He started having a red and raw belly last Tuesday. One of his front legs was pulled up into his body and he smelled awful. Took him to the only local vet who sees hamsters and they treated him for mites (Ivermectin?) and put him on antibiotics 2X per day. Deep cleaned cage, accessories and bedding change. He got worse over the weekend. His whole head is hairless and skin is crusty and his poor little mouth is bloody/crusty. So Saturday he stopped eating and I was thinking possible need to have him put to sleep. Then last night he started eating plain spaghetti and plain yogurt. But he can't walk well and I cannot even see one of his front legs. The vet said it was there upon the physical exam but could be sore. We love this little guy and it is absolutely heartbreaking to have to handle him, but I got the syringe in his mouth a little easier this morn. I am taking him back for another round of Ivermectin(?) in a week but Im just really worried. Do you all have any advice on really soft, mushy food that sick hamsters will eat? Or any advice on how to make him more comfortable? Thank you. Sorry this was so long.

This really doesn't sound like mites. The little ones sounds as if he may have Cushings disease with a skin infection on top of this. There is a section on Cushings in the healthcare forum. It could also be some type of skin cancer which has started to break open and is now infected. You have tried your best and he does sound quite ill. Unless the vets have actually found mites treating for this can be pointless.
They do enjoy babyfood - something like the little jars of Heinz chicken and pasta. Our like ready brek too and maybe a little cooked mashed veg would be enjoyed

I'm really sorry if he does have this. I personally would not let them go through it as soon as I felt they were struggling but that is a personal choice each person must make.
There are some pics here of the progression of Cushing's made by a member and a great tribute to little Snickers that may help others. Stages of Cushings Disease with illustrated pics (inc. treatment)

It was so horrible watching him suffer. I took him to the vet and he is hamster heaven now. I'm still crying. But I have to suck it up so my daughter isn't so upset. I really loved Hamsty.

I am sorry for your loss but it is the last great gift we can give them peaceful rest when they need it. He will have felt your love around you as he passed and he knew that you tried for him.
Run free at the bridge Hamsty.
Please feel free to make a tribute to him on our memorial board.
