URGENT -- dwarf's skin is lifting from her tiny body!
my dwarf hamster's skin is lifting from her tiny body. i noticed while handling her that she had some crusty, white-ish clear-ish substance on her back near her shoulders. i picked at it to see if it would flake off, but it didn't. it is rock hard and her skin is crumbly and very dry around it. it is deep in her fur. i lightly dabbed it with a wet cotton ball. upon closer inspection, a solid quarter inch of her fur and skin lifts off her body in a flap when touched - the skin underneath bright red, but there is no blood. when i first started to gently pick at it, she pooped on me and it was brown. after that, her poop was green. this might be a weird unimportant detail but it alarmed me. i did not investigate further and let her in her cage.
i have no idea how long this has been going on, but i did change her bedding a few days ago. i went from aspen wood shavings to half aspen wood shavings and half kaytee brand clean & cozy in "natural". i have not changed her food - she eats fiesta blend food and sometimes i hand-feed her aruglua, although i have not feed her anything fresh in a few days.
she seems to have adjusted to me well, i like to think. she never bites, always crawls right onto my hands, will sleep in my sweatshirt pocket, although she more often loves to run around my body and explore my bed with me.
her behavior is normal. she loves to burrow. she is active and curious. she eats and drinks.
her cage is three us feet by one us foot and she has a hide-out, wood chews, a wheel, and paper tubes. she has about four inches of bedding. i change her water bottle water almost every day.
i can not afford a vet, but she in under insurance by petco as i got her less than 30 days ago. i am crying right now because i am so scared. even a suggestion about how to help her get out of pain (if she is in any) would help.

Re: URGENT -- dwarf's skin is lifting from her tiny body!
If you cannot afford a vet then you need to take her back and insist she is seen by a vet then returned to you. Don't let them replace her but insist she is checked once the vet has seen her and treated her. It could be a number of things ranging from a bite wound to a skin infection so it really does need checked out. I wouldn't touch the area until it has been checked out.
Start setting up a vet fund now by putting some money aside every week and not touching it till needed. Even just the cost of a coffee every week soon mounts up for future emergencies.
