Hamster less active and sleeping a lot
Hi my hamster is nearly 2 ages old and the past 4-5 days I have noticed she has been not very active recently and sleeping more. She has started to struggle going up the cage pipes so we changed the cage so she does not need to do this now. As far as I know she is eating and drinking. However, when I got her out tonight to check her I noticed she had a hard poo stuck to her bottom. I managed to remove this with warm water.
She seems to be struggling walking round the cage and not her usual active self. She still is responsive to us. Do you think I should taķe her to the vets?

Re: Hamster less active and sleeping a lot
Got Missy out again last night and saw that round the throat area is swollen. Definitely a trip to the vets.

Re: Hamster less active and sleeping a lot
If she has some swelling and is acting out of sorts then definitely have her checked out. She is quite an elderly hammy now and things often start to go wrong. I hope you get an answer at the vets.

Re: Hamster less active and sleeping a lot
Been to the vets afternoon and Missy has a mass. The vet said that as she was quite lively and responsive that he would not put her to sleep. He said if she gets worse to go back and he would put her down. Feeling sad

I’m sorry this had to happen
Sometimes life just goes like that. She is an old woman now, things are bound to happen. Let her live her happy life until she isn’t comfortable anymore. In my opinion, putting an animal down when they are in pain is a good way to go. Nobody would ever want their animal put to sleep, but it it reassuring to know that they won’t be hurting anymore. Also, you get the chance to say goodbye. I wish you the best of luck! ♥️
