Euthanise or not?
Hi, my female winter white hamster is almost 2 and a half years old has a very large tumor on/in her ear. She still eats and walks around but is unbalanced and has stopped using her sand bath and mostly stays in one section of her cage. She occasionally bites the bars of her cage when she never used to. She has been drinking and urinating more frequently than usual. She has been on an anti inflammatory/ painkiller for about a month and a half. Her eye by the infected ear is partially shut now and the tumor smells quite bad and there is also usually a little but of pus coming out of it. Im wondering if she’s in pain and it’s time to euthanise her? I love her so much and I want her to be happy so if she’s in pain I don’t want her to suffer.

Re: Euthanise or not?
Are you sure its a tumour? It sounds more like a severe ear infection tbh. Have you tried treating her with antibiotics?
Ultimately the decision to euthanise is up to you and what you think is best for her and her quality of life.

Re: Euthanise or not?
That is a good point alpa makes. Has the tumour been diagnosed by a vet? Tumours can also weep although not pus usually.
She is a very great age for a hamster. I think the thing now is to look at quality of life. You say she still eats, drinks and walks around. If she is still eating and drinking and mobile, even if wobbly, it suggests she is not ready to give up. However, how she looks and behaves can also be an indicator. If she looks hunched up and unhappy then she may well be in pain or suffering. Does she actually seem to be enjoying anything? Does she enjoy food and treats when you give her them (and give her whatever she likes - even cake at this stage!). Or is she not that interested?

Re: Euthanise or not?
Hi again, thanks both of you so much for your input. Her tumor was diagnosed by a vet over a month ago as she was not responding to antibiotics. I didn’t want her suffering to get to the stage where she stopped eating altogether, so today we decided to consult our vet and in the end we made the decision to put her down earlier this morning. We held a funeral and buried her. We can only hope she had a happy life and is in a better place now (don’t worry, I fed her lots of treats before she passed :’) ). RIP Floodie

I think you made a difficult but kind decision to end Floodies long life and saved her from suffering. Your little hamster is at peace now and her memories will stay with you.
