Why did my hamster die?
I don't expect a to reach a definitive conclusion here, but I hope I can get some kind of idea so I can avoid a reoccurrence.
Dewey died this morning (Monday). Here's a breakdown:
Symtoms: started about 2 days ago. He didn't come out for his nightly outings, even with food offerings. Loss of appetite. No aggression. Lethargic. Didn't drink when I tried to give him water. Physically, he looked fine. No lumps.
Post death: I left him in a blanket while I ran to get something and when I came back, he was dead, so I didn't see him die. He had yellow-red fluid coming out of his mouth though. Never seen that before.
What happened??? Some suspected causes:
- temperature change. With warmer weather, my thermostat can't decide whether to 'cool' or 'heat.' It's been fluctuating between 15C and 22C for the past 2 weeks.
-new people. I've had a cleaner come on the weekends for the past month. New people seem to stress him out, and this is the first time I've had a 'stranger' come so regularly. The house is usually quiet, but the cleaner was a little noisy.
-strawberry. I hadn't given him a strawberry in a long while; they're a treat for me too. I gave him a washed piece a week ago. Did his system reject the reintroduction of fruit?
-me. I hate to say this, but earlier this week I forgot to feed him for 2.5 days. He was back to regular feeding on Wednesday. He seemed fine right up until Friday night.
Age (aprx): 1yr 7mth
Breed: Syrian, male
I'm sleuthing to distract myself from grief. RIP my sweet lil angel. I hope you get endless nummies wherever you are.
