Elderly Syrian Feeding Advice?
My Syrian is now around 2 years and 9 months and he's showing his age. I think he's lost his top teeth but still has the bottom ones, so I need to know what foods to give him to ensure he gets enough nutrients. He's getting a bit thin so I think he needs protein so was thinking boiled egg white, poached chicken breast etc.
Any advice would be appreciated, thanks.

Re: Elderly Syrian Feeding Advice?
It is quite normal for them to get thinner and lose body bulk as they age and that is a really good age for a Syrian.
Feeding extra protein to an older hamster is unlikely to make them put on weight and if fact can be more harmful due to the fact their kidneys and liver can be put under strain processing it. The top teeth do get shorter when they are older too and as long as he is chewing they should be fine.
We tend to spoil our oldies with some softer food - things like porridge, soaked weetabix or cheerios, baby food etc are all enjoyed as well as fresh veggies daily. They often don't eat as much as they did when younger and use less energy as they sleep more.
He sounds lovely and you have obviously cared for him well so keep doing what you are doing with a few extras added in.

Re: Elderly Syrian Feeding Advice?
Porridge, egg white and grapes have always been our go to when they get a bit older and feel i should be giving them something softer.
I often think they stop drinking enough aswell at that age so always think the grapes help them get some liquid in too.

Re: Elderly Syrian Feeding Advice?
Thanks for the replies guys. I've had him since he was about 12 weeks and in that time he's never had tap water, only the same bottled still mineral water I drink myself. They put too many chemicals in the tap water in my opinion.
He's also only ever had Carefresh bedding, never any pine as I researched before buying him and heard it wasn't good for them.
It's really hard watching him slow down so much and sleep more and more.
@ Puddle - he actually started drinking much more around the age of 2. Before that his bottle barely went down at all in a 24 hoyur period but now it can go down a good cm or more.
@ Souffle - thanks for the protein tip as I had thought he must be lacking it to be getting thinner. He does enjoy egg white but it's something he'll nibble a very small piece of while I hold it and then just leave, knowing when he's had enough and makes no attempt to pouch any.
