Default Looking after my hamster while on holiday?

I have a 3-years old Syrian Hamster (male, 146g, 36 months). I am going away for about 3 months and am struggling with finding someone who can look after him. He does pee a lot so he needs his toilet cleaned every day and needs his water bottle filled up every day. He is also very picky and wants fresh fruits, vegs and treats everyday (he doesn't like his muesli). The best option would to bring him with me so I can provide him with the best care possible. However, the total travel time could take up to 20 hours (with 14 hours being on a plane). I'm afraid that this would stress him out and he might not like the new country as it's quite humid. I have thought about having him stay at a small animal boarding but am afraid that he might not like the new environment and strangers. Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

PS. I have found someone who can look after him while I was away before I booked the ticket but something just came up and this option is not longer available.

Default Re: Looking after my hamster while on holiday?

This is difficult, he is a very old hamster and you are going away for a long time, I think whatever you do is going to be stressful. Do you mean he would be going on a plane too? Was going to say it may be kinder to leave him here (given his age) depending on what the travel is like but also on how much interaction he's used to, whether you can find a good place for him to stay etc. I usually go away for around 2 months in the summer and generally leave my hamsters in my family's care - but they've had good hamster care ingrained in their memory for years now so it's always worked. But if it's going to be someone you don't know well then it is definitely concerning I agree. Think there was a pet sitter list on the forum but it's probably rather outdated. Not terribly helpful but I think it's going to be a difficult decision so I hope you can sort something out.
