Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
Maybe he's just a quiet slow hamster. Or maybe he will suddenly break out and go completely wild lol. I tend to go with - if they look fine they probably are fine, so after quarantine if he seems fine I wouldn't go to the vet.

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
He got his wheel this week and he is a lot slower than Jin on hers but he still makes a good show of himself!
His ears have definitely improved so I'm happy enough to end his quarantine on Saturday.
I got a proper wee stroke last night and he never felt scrawny when I looked him over at the start but he's not getting as chubby as I would like either. I'm thinking cheese and biscuits, since that always helps me put on a bit of winter weight.

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
So pleased to hear that he has come on so well and will be out of quarantine tomorrow.
Cheese and biscuits- now that is a temptation that is hard to avoid! But how about a bit of porridge or sunflower hearts/ other nuts in moderation to help him fill out a bit. Maybe those are on his treat list already.

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
There are sunflower seeds in his food mix so he’s been getting a few extra of those, some peanuts, chicken breast, bits of brown bread, dried apples and just regular veggies.
For a minute I was like oh no I don’t keep porridge in the house but my bf has a huge bag in the cupboard. Forgot the hams don’t need to eat gluten free lol excellent idea!

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
He sounds to be having lots of tasty treats Newt goes bonkers for pumpkin seeds - I get bags of them from the bakery counter in the supermarket. When I was trying to get some weight back on Charlie, I did a bit of research and pecan nuts have the highest calories of all the nuts. High in fats but healthy fats. Newt gets one of those once a week and half a brazil nut once a week. And loads of pumpkin seeds! I let him get into the bag on the sofa recently and he pouched half the bag!

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
Twice a week would probably be fine too (pecan nut halves).

This is why they are the most delicious of the nuts and why I absolutely can't have them in the house or I genuinely eat them by the handful
We have Brazil buts, walnuts and hazelnuts from a big bag of christmas nuts but I haven't tried them with Goose yet. He takes his time over a peanut tbh so I don't know if he'd be fit for it without me cracking them first. I will look out for pumpkin seeds! They are also v tasty roasted if the hams feel like sharing lol
Bf shared his porridge over the weekend and I've never seen a cleaner spoon. Happy boy
Goose is now in the detolf and monkey-barring like crazy. Worse than Jin was. I'm hoping it's just him being a bit stressy from the move but I have my partner promised to sew him hammocks to be on the safe side anyway.

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
Ah yes - I once had to have a repeat blood test after a routine annual one - they suspected thyroid issues due to something being raised. On the repeat one it was back to normal. Apparently it was caused by eating too many pecan nuts! Not harmful but did fudge my blood test and I'd eaten the whole bag.
Yes I only give the shelled ones - the shells are a bit hard on anything except monkey nuts I think. Other nuts then!

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
Hahaha pecans are a powerful nut!!! I had no idea that was a thing!
I've been cracking nuts with bodyweight and force of will, so far Brazil nuts have defeated me and Jins teeth but she likes carrying them around. I can manage a walnut lol
It's salad for Goose this evening tho, this pic is telling me I should have dusted the glass after tipping the hemp in, wow

Re: Rehab-ing a rescue
Glad the porridge went down well! Pumpkin seeds are a hit here with all hams. Baking section of the supermarket is where I get mine.
