Default Trimming robo claws?

My robo Sundae’s claws are getting quite long now that he’s almost 2 but he doesn’t stay still long enough for me to trim them and he’s too small for me to feel comfortable scruffing him like my Russians. My local vets also don’t do hamster claw trimmings any more.

He has stones and ceramic dishes in his cage but they dont seem to be helping much. Does anyone have any more ideas on how to keep his claws trimmed?

Hmm. It sounds tricky but - Nugget is not tame and almost impossible to pick up. However, when I do hold him he will lie on his back in my hand and not move and just lies there. Have you tried that? Rather than scruffing? Obviously holding him over something soft. He didn't even wriggle when I started poking around at his lumps! I'm sure if he would lie in your hand on his back you could snip the very ends off the toenails using your other hand.

Otherwise I guess it might be better to take him to the vets for a nail trim, with you holding him while they clip.

Could you try the sieve method? Put him in a wire sieve and when the nails drop through the mesh you can snip them off. It's easier with two people if you have anyone who could hold the sieve with a lid over it.

I’ve tried holding him but he wriggles too much, I’ve never heard of the seive method though, I’ll have to try it. Thank you!

Do you have an unglazed terra cotta tray or flower pot? That worked with my previous dwarf hamster. Souffle's sieve method sounds useful, too. I didn't know about doing it that way. I wonder if a very fine, smooth mesh strainer would work the same way-too tightly woven for a paw to get through or injured, very smooth to the touch so no abrasions to Sundae, and the nails would poke through. Definitely a two-person job that way, I think.

Yes, terracotta was what I meant not ceramic lol. I managed to get a few of his claws trimmed using the seive method but he got too stressed for me to get them all so I’ll have to try again soon
