Exclamation Paraphimosis not resolving, help!

Hello! New to the forum but I've been lurking and learning for a while!

My son has a 6 month old Syrian male named Rocky. For the past 2-3 weeks his boy part has been sticking out and not going back in. We've taken him to the vet twice now... here's what's been done:

First visit (Thursday) the vet cleaned and reinserted and placed one stitch to keep it in. We were sent home with Metacam for pain/swelling. That night it came back out.
Second day (Friday) we went back in for a second stitch, x-ray, and urine test. No kidney stones, no UTI. It came out again that evening. As far as I can tell both stitches are still in, he is still peeing and the tissue looks healthy. We have been using dextrose solution and water based lube (KY) to try to get it back in. Finally last night (Sunday) I was able to get it back in... but this morning it's back out again

Just before I got it back in last night, there was a tiny bit of sticky stuff coming out of his penis that was brownish green. Once I pulled it out, everything slid back into place. Maybe a coincidence. But I called the vet and asked if we could try Baytril (even though it doesn't appear he has a UTI). She said it's worth a try so we're waiting on picking that up.

Any ideas? Anyone else dealt with something similar?

This little guy means a lot to us, and he's so healthy and bright eyed otherwise. He's been just the sweetest and never bites, even with all we've been doing to him. And he takes his medicine from the syringe so well.
I can't stomach the thought of him going downhill.

PS He is spoiled rotten and well cared for, aspen and uber bedding, 12" silent spinner wheel, lives in a bin cage with connected crittertrails with Ovo tubes. My son read every book he could get his hands on about hamsters before he got him and is constantly talking about proper hamster care, lol.

Poor little lad. There is nothing wrapped around the penis is there like a hair or something? This can prevent the blood draining from the penis and it becomes swollen and then cannot be retracted. You are right to keep replacing it as it can get damaged and sore if it is not inside the sheath. I think it is worth trying antibiotics. He may have some congenital abnormality but I would have expected this to show up when he was younger. There is some info here and your vet sounds to have done what is suggested. https://www.msdvetmanual.com/reprodu...-small-animals.
It may be worth taking the wheel out for a few days just in case the penis is getting rubbed as he runs and swelling then prolapsing again.
I hope he does get better soon,

The vet cleaned and examined everything, she said she didn't find any hair or anything.

We took him in today originally to get the stitches out, our only option from here is to have a surgery done, which we cannot afford and isn't without risks itself.

So the stitches are actually staying in for a couple more days while we decide what to do. It kinda looks like we're just going to have to keep him clean and try to "put it back in" every day for now.

aww bless. You are trying your best and that's all you can do. Hopefully if the swelling subside it will stay in place. It's not that common so the little lad has been unlucky. Hoping he feels better soon.

Fingers crossed it has worked when the stitches come out.

Update on Rocky, stitches came out yesterday, issue is still not resolved but the vet said it looks better than it did before, he's not in any discomfort, and that we could just keep it lubricated and put it back in each day. Main concern is it drying out and getting cracked, etc, causing infection and pain.

She said she checked with another exotics vet that works at UW, and his thoughts were that it might be genetic, which makes sense since he also has that funny flipped breastbone issue.

So we're feeling a little better and resigned to the extra care he'll need. But surgery is actually more affordable than originally though so it's still a possibility.

Through all of this the little guy has never bit us and just gets sweeter and sweeter. He even escaped his cage the other day and came when he was called!

Lovely that he has such a great personality. Hamsters only bite when they are afraid or in pain, and they can sense when someone handles them gently and when someone doesn't - so you have earned his trust.

Sorry this issue isn't resolved. Did the vet say the surgery option would fix this? Because at 6 months old, surgery is worth considering so he can live out his life without this constant issue.

Good to hear Rocky is still doing OK and long may it continue. It might well be worthwhile thinking about the op and saving up. The vet may even be willing to let you pay a little every month.
