Worried about my hamster's eye
Hello all, new here. I have a 2 yr female Syrian called Nadia and I have noticed today that one of her eyes is very tightly closed. The other is as bright as ever. I have tried to wipe it very gently with a cotton bud but she wont stay still for me. I'd go to the vet but it's twenty five to midnight here so I can't. I can't see anything in her eye except there's a tiny line of some white thing closing it? Not sure but I do see a tiny...line (sorry I'm panicking) going from her top and bottom lid. I'm freaking out as she's my baby, I'm sure I don't have to explain that here! Thanks in advance for any advice! Pic is terrible and you can't really see it but I tried my best.

Re: Worried about my hamster's eye
It's not uncommon for older hamsters to get this sort of 'sleep' in their eyes. I wouldn't worry too much. They often clean it off on their own but if not then make a solution of 1pt cooled boiled water and a teaspoon of salt and bathe the eye using a cotton ball and try and ease it open. It's not easy but if you gently swaddle her in a teatowel it should help keep her still to do it. If it looks red or there is a reddish discharge then a vet visit will be needed next week when they are open and she may get some drops or gel to apply.

Re: Worried about my hamster's eye
Ah I got preemptively worried! Her eyes are fine now. I guess it's better to be safe that sorry. I know she's an old girl now so am more worried than I used to be. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Worried about my hamster's eye
I had the same thing with our robo the other day - it looks terrible doesn't it. He came out of his nest looking like he'd been in a fight. But next day it was fine again.
If it happens again and you need to bathe it then use the saline like Souffle suggested - I dissolve the salt when the water is boiling hot and then let it cool. To almost cold but only just tepid. Try not to get her too wet - the cotton bud only needs to be slightly damp.
