Default Urgent advice!

My daughter's hamster escaped on Friday night. His cage in in the utility room where it's warm, on the work top. He would have fallen from a reasonable height and has clearly hurt himself as he has blood in his urine.

Alarmed, I called the vets in the morning and she gave antibiotic and anti inflammatory medicine. He has been given some dosages but he isn't picking up.

I'm so upset we're going to lose him. Has this happened to anyone else? He isn't eating much or drinking much either and just sleeps more than usual. Vet said he could have banged his bladder and he should pick up but my gut says things aren't looking good.

Any advice would be gratefully appreciated!

It does sound as if there is some more serious internal injury. If he is in pain then he will not want to eat or drink and this in turn means he will not have the means to recover. If the meds do not seem to be helping he may need to be kept in and given fluid and possibly xrayed to see if the can identify the source of the blood. It could be coming from a damaged kidney or another organ. The ribs can pierce soft tissue if they are broken. It is very hard to operate on hamsters due to the small size. Try and get him feeding - things like baby food or porridge may tide him over till he heals inside. Could he have eaten anything when he escaped?

Has he walked at all since the injury? ie have you seen him walking and does he seem to be walking alright - not dragging back legs or anything? I think I would want an x ray doing. I assume they ruled that out - I think it would only show broken bones - not any organs - but if it showed a rib in the wrong place it could indicate what the internal injury might be. Falling on his bladder sounds a bit vague.

Is your vet an exotic vet? It could be worth having another opinion with an exotic vet (they know much more about hamsters - general vets often know very little or aren't up on various investigations and treatments). If you google exotic vets in your area there is bound to be one not too far away.

On the other hand if you think he is dying, then it may be best to just keep him comfortable and give him the pain meds. Is he eating at all?

He was eating and drinking on Sunday, the day after he was found. Now I'm moving the water bottle to where he is laying and he has had a few sips. Not very interested in food, a few bits here and there. Definitely out of character.

He is walking and moving around fine. No issues with leg's and he is only passing bloody urine, not bleeding from the back passage thankfully. He doesn't have any blood on his fur either so not bleeding massively but enough for me to worry. He's only five months old so it could be dehydration but there is do much blood it makes me wonder. Blobs of blood when he's trying to wee. Poor little guy 😢
