Default Natural yogurt before Baytril?

My Syrian Willow was prescribed 0.2ml of 2.5% Baytril once daily today. She started losing her fur around 2 1/2 weeks ago and, after treating her for mites last Monday with no improvement, the vet thought that we should try treating her for an infection as she has also been drinking a lot more. They didn’t mention any sort of probiotic to give her along with the antibiotic but after looking around the forum about it, many people seem to give it to maintain a good intestinal flora. I don’t want to risk making her poorly by giving her natural yogurt when I shouldn’t/don’t need to, but I also don’t want to risk her getting more poorly from the Baytril, as I know it can cause diarrhoea which could be very dangerous. I can’t seem to find any good small animal probiotics available in the uk, especially ones that I could get quickly, so I have bought a little pot of Yeo valley natural yogurt https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/produc...49-65681-65682

Is this safe for her to have? Is it even worth it or is it totally unnecessary? I haven’t given her any Baytril yet as I’m waiting to see what the verdict is on this, especially as those who use probiotics give it the night before giving the Baytril.
Thank you, Poppy and Willow

Our Robo is currently having Baytril and not showing any ill effects. Others know more about probiotics than me but I was planning to give something when the Bayril was finished.

Check the dose on the bottle though. I nearly had a mistake thinking 0.2 ml when it was 0.02ml - because the vet showed me the wrong marker on the syringe. On my bottle it says the dose is 0.02 ml. If yours has been diluted then maybe it is 0.2 ml but be careful as it is 10 times a 0.02ml dose.

I would double check the dose before starting (it should say on the label of the bottle you were given). If it's 0.02ml it is the second tiny marker on a 1ml syringe. If it is 0.2m it is the number 2 marker on the syringe - 10 times as much. I suspect, that unless it has been diluted, it should be 0.02ml which is about one drop of medicine. Let us know.

I double checked as I thought this seemed like a lot and it definitely says 0.2ml once daily. I had a look at the dosage on the website of the company that makes Baytril and it is supposed to be a 0.2ml/kg dose twice a day for a mammal, and Willow is only 140g! I think I may just leave it tonight and check in the morning, as I'm not sure if it has been diluted or not and I definitely don't want to overdose her.

I think it's worth checking, as I had a scare with that! If it isn't diluted specially, then it would be 0.02ml - which is about one drop. A very small amount. 0.2ml would be quite a lot of liquid to get into a hamster in one go.

I would recommend giving a probiotic, Pro C is available in most pet shops or you can buy it online, I use Potent brew but Pro C would be fine for short term use.
Do make sure to give it as far apart from the meds as possible though, so one in the morning the other in the evening or at least several hours apart.
Although it says to put Pro C in water I wouldn't you can't monitor the amount they have & it means a lot of cleaning water bottles! Just sprinkle a tiny pinch on some food, wet food preferably like veg or baby food, porridge or whatever she likes.

Ok, thank you. I have seen Pro C in Pets at Home before but I'm always a bit wary of the healthcare products they sell for small pets there, but I'll pick some up later on

I've decided to start probiotics when the antibiotics are finished - I want to make sure the antibiotics work! And some people do that - there are various views on when to give them. I am also still looking at which one to get. I would prefer just to give the good bacteria and not give added vitamins.

That's a very good point, I think I may wait until after she has finished her course. I looked into getting Bene bac but it seems to be really expensive in the uk, so I went and bought some Pro C earlier to have on standby if I need it, but I am going to wait and see if I can find a better one first. May I ask what dosage your robo is on? I checked Willow's dosage with the vets earlier and another one told me to give her 0.1ml per day for 5 days instead of the previous 0.2ml per day for seven days. Does this still seem to high? I hate having to check with them but I obviously don't want to accidentally overdose Willow.

Edit: of course yours is most probably going to be less than Willow would need as robos are so small, but I was just wondering to give me a rough idea.

Probiotics won't stop the antibiotics from working, some of the bacteria from the probiotics will be killed off by the antibiotics but the point of giving them is that some will survive & the natural gut bacteria won't be so depleted when the antibiotics are finished so will recover quicker.

Yes the Baytril dose for our robo (say 30g hamster) is 0.02ml. How much does your hamster weigh? It's a bit concerning they have now changed the dose from 0.2 to 0.1!

This is an old thread but your dose sounds right Either 0.1ml or 0.2ml for a Syrian sounds normal. But I would give it for 7 days whichever dose it is.

What is the Baytril dosage for a syrian?
