Hamster makes odd sounds

Hi, for the last couple of days my hamster has been making strange sounds, something like a puppy crying. What is really strange is that physically she seems fine, she eats and drinks normally, walks as usual and she doesn't seem to have any external injuries. I'm wondering what could have caused that, the only thing that I changed in her cage was that I switched from a water bottle to a water dish and I added some hay mixed with a little chamomile to her nest, and sprinkled it around the cage, but I don't think that an allergic reaction could have caused her to make such sounds. I still plan on removing some of the hay and see how it goes. What could be the cause? What should I do?[/QUOTE]

If you put your hammy's chest up to your ears can you hear popping or gurgling noises in the lungs? That's usually what I listen for, when I'm suspecting a respiratory infection. In regards to the hay, I'm not a fan. With my experience with horses, I know how easy it is to find moldy hay.

My Syrian was actually just making the puppy crying noises, but he was just having a bad dream.

There's also a possibility that you're hearing "peeping". All of my Syrian's have "peeped" when they were happy. One of them didn't start until he was a little older. They all sounded a little different.

In your situation, I would probably remove the hay and chamomile and see if the noises stop in a few days. After that, I would introduce one thing at a time to determine if it was the hay or chamomile.

I discovered that she was making the noise even before the hay and chamomile . I'll definitely check her lungs. Thanks
